PC To PC Chat

Question

I used to use a program called AChat when I lived with my parents. Each computer on the network could chat with each other.

I am now not with them but would like the same ability. My father does not use MSN, never has Gmail open or anything else.

Wondering if there is something like AChat that allows over the internet or something.

Probably your best bet is going to be Skype.....you cant share directories with it, but you can send files, chat, voice chat, etc. I have tried just about every chat protocol out there that supports voice (gmail, mumble, raidcall, xfire, and others I can't remember but would recognize by name), and if voice chat is what you want, skype is hands down the best, but even without needing voice, it is not a bad message program that supports file transfers, it does have issues every now and then of not sending messages until the person on the other end says something (I think it has to do with the connection dropping out or timing out, and not coming back "alive" until the other person pings you with a message), but it doesn't happen often. There may be other better ones out there, but for 1 to 1, skype has been the only one I have been able to use for more than a few days (and if anyone knows any better that support voice with good quality, please let me know).

if the problem with msn is the interface try configuring something light for your parents like miranda im. just configure one msn, icq or whatever account for them. make it simple.

Actually the problem is my father does not like creating accounts.

So I wanted to find something where all he would have to do is install the application and he can talk with me.

Why don't you create an account for him and then give him the username and password through a phone call?
