How To Set the users' Access To The Programs ?

Recommended Posts

Hi All !

I have a question to ask about Windows XP Accounts Management.

I have set up few accounts on my Windows Xp (Home Edition). I took the master Admin account and gave my brothers restricted accounts.

How can I name programs that they are allowed to use and name other programs that should not be used by them ?

For Example if I want them to access the Computer Games but when their examination week starts I want to block the games from their accounts .. Or If I want to allow them to use MSN Messenger for Example and ban them from using ICQ ?

I think its possible cause sometimes when I install new programs it appears in their Start Menus but sometimes they don't !

How can I control that?

Thanks for your concern.

that's becuase you can create shortcut for all users or currently logged in user.

completely block access to a given prgrm is pretty easy. rclick on dir of prgrm you want to block, properties, security tab, select proper user and deny all access attributes.

you could also play around with registry permisions, but i think it's somewhat redundant becuase they don't have access to actual files.

For Example if I want them to access the Computer Games but when their examination week starts I want to block the games from their accounts ..

i think that will be pretty hard to do. you would have to play around w/ account policies and maybe login script that will check current system time...not sure how do it exactly. you might have to dig thru ms technet or kb

Regular permissions should work just fine. Just turn off simple file sharing and assign permissions. Just be sure not to lock yourself out of anything. (I have seen the Administrator account locked out of local logons before....not pretty.)
