Tips for learning flash..

Question

flash_100x100.jpg

More and more I feel that flash is the subject that's missing in my knowledge portofolio. I just got the Design Premium CS5.5 (Adobe) which also offers flash. I wish to try more of the flash potential and for this I've searched some tutorials..which general speaking..jumps directly into coding (which is not my best) and learning/practice is no so linear as it should . I've worked a bit with CS4 but not so serious as should be so:

- coding is a mandatory if flash is my next target?

- should I take an e-book (lynda..) & focus my attention on it's every aspect.

- I'm focuses especially on effects/interactions/webdesign.

-any coding missing will be a real barrier in the way of deepening knowledge or could be accumulated during learning?

Thanks for any suggestion & tips related to this subject.

Hey there!

I've been developing in Actionscript for many years now and am active in the community to a certain degree.

If you want to create games or applications or anything more than animations you're going to have to learn Actionscript 3.

For effects, animation and interaction, the bare minimum should be ok and you should not bother delving too deeply into Actionscript 3.

It's not always easy to know where to begin so I'm going to offer you some tips.

There's a big difference between coding OOP ( object oriented ) and coding on frames. If you're just doing animations, effects and nothing too major, you should be ok with frame coding.

Don't overcomplicate things, no matter what all these tutorials tell you is right, only what you can properly grasp and use is right.

Using Lynda tutorials is a good way to start, but it might get boring real soon. If you have some willpower it should be ok though.

If you want to create your first game and start of really proper with OOP coding, this is the BEST start: http://gamedev.michaeljameswilliams.com/as3-avoider-game-tutorial-base/

Michael J Williams is great and writes really good and funny. He is now an editor on Tuts+ ( www.activetuts.com), a great way to learn also! :)

The best thing for you to do is getting used to the Flash IDE by using some Lynda tutorials, google tutorials, general other resources etc..

Also try to hang out on Twitter for help, great community tips and so on. The Flash community is pretty great!
