+jamesyfx Subscriber² Posted December 7, 2011 Subscriber² Share Posted December 7, 2011 I think you'll be safe with any of the choices in your poll, but I hear the software with the best protection is BitDefender.
tsupersonic
Stick with MS Security Essentials and Router/Windows Firewall = free. Or go with Avast, AVG or any of the free ones. Best protection = common sense! robertwnielsen, Wombatt and MightyJordan 3 Share

+virtorio MVC Posted December 7, 2011 MVC Share Posted December 7, 2011 I find 3rd party firewall software is more annoying and intrusive than it is useful, so I wouldn't bother with an "Internet Security" package and just get an Anti-Virus. As for the Anti-Virus listed above I would go for Norton AntiVirus, which does well in both detection and (surprisingly, when you look at it's history) performance. Or just be smart with the sites you visit and use Microsoft Security Essentials, which may not have the highest detection rates but is certainly "good enough". Yorak
Why do you need a firewall? Windows Firewall works just fine. Are you connected directly to your modem or running through a router? Most routers have a hardware firewall. Regardless, I would recommend NOD32. goretsky 1 Share
BaZurk
I feel safer with a software firewall as well working with my buffalo router.
bbfc_uk
Norton Internet Security 2012 is really good (as have the past few versions since Symantec cleaned up their act).
Raa
Hardware based firewall (router), and MSE (free) or NOD32 AV (paid). If hardware based isn't an option, then NOD32 Suite (paid). goretsky 1 Share

primexx
everyone always says you should use hardware firewall and not software, but neglect the huge segment of laptop machines where you do need to use software firewall because you'll be using other people's networks. so yes, use a software firewall. whether you should use a third party one however is not really that clear cut, since the Windows firewall should work just fine even though the UI is a bit less user friendly. Also MSE is very capable as an anti-malware solution, and combined with Windows firewall you should be covered pretty well. Personally, I use KIS because it's still generally one of the best and it goes on sale all the time so I never have to pay more than $20 for a 1yr 3-pc licence, which I figure is worth it for the more friendly UI, more frequent signature updates, and possibly (questionable) better detection. Dermot
Since you asked about a suite and people are giving you single antivirus results like NOD32 I'll say Eset Smart Security which is NOD32 and Firewall and Anti Malware, Spam protection suite. goretsky 1 Share

deleted_acc
MSE + Win fw + HW fw is all you need. And of course common sense while roaming the interwebs, without it no software gonna help you anyways ;-)

BaZurk
Okay i'm leaning towards Kaspersky Internet Security. I have used MSE and I just don't see it as robust in features. Maybe its just more user friendly. I'm using a trial of g data now and not exactly thrilled with it.
Grinch
I put my vote towards other, which would be Microsoft Security Essentials. Been using it since first beta and haven't stopped.
BetaAddict
Okay i'm leaning towards Kaspersky Internet Security. I have used MSE and I just don't see it as robust in features. Maybe its just more user friendly. I'm using a trial of g data now and not exactly thrilled with it. I have used Kaspersky initially, then Norton Internet Security in the past, and both work great as far as providing a balance between autonomy and manual control. But haven't used a propriety antivirus ever since MSE was released. It really is all you need and it's free. Not sure what "robust features" you are looking for, unless you are a network admin that is uber crazy about controlling access/permission to every port, which might explain why Kaspersky seems appealing. Even as most of who have commented in this thread are very experienced users, simplicity of MSE+Windows Firewall gets the job done. I would not mistake an extensively featured, attractive looking, and expensive security suite as the same thing as better protection, as you may very well get the same protection except potentially sluggish performance when all those features are competing for computer resources. Mazhar
If you want peace of mind, free of spam, viruses PC, believe me, get Microsoft Security Essentials.
Gotenks98
Neither of those. All that crap is for paranoid people. All you need is a basic antivirus and hardware firewall on a router. Anything else is overkill and it would not really protect you anyways if a hacker was coming for you. All those other suites do is causes poor system performance and interact badly with the way windows handles certain things. Its so not worth it. Just download MSE and call it a day.
