Windows UPDATE ... please help me ...

Recommended Posts

Hello , i have just formatted my harddrive and reinstalled WinXP Pro and like everytime after a clean install i went to the Windows Update site . But after updating the software version for the update scan , i Scanned for Updates and there were 15 updates available . So far so good ; BUT after clicking the Install button in the review and install section the EULA in the little pop up windows is unavailable and even though i click ACCEPT the site looks like it is downloading but after 3 or 4 seconds it says Installation Incomplete and that's the point where i'm going nuts . Please reply if you may have an answer . Thank you

I'm having the same problem, it has installed a few of them before it died yesterday, and now I have 5 remaining which refuse to download no matter what proxy/connection settings I use.

Anyone?

This is a technical "issue" (ahem) with Windows Update :). It's a problem at MS's end.

Basically, Windows Update seems to be trying to use a website named "www.download.windowsupdate.com" to obtain the updates from. This doesn't exist - it should be "download.microsoft.com".

You can fix this by adding an entry to your "hosts" file that tells it to go to "download.microsoft.com" instead:

1. Fire up Notepad.

2. Go to "File>Open" and navigate to "C:WINDOWSsystem32driversetc". Double-click on "hosts".

3. Go to the bottom of the file and add this:

207.68.131.20 www.download.windowsupdate.com

(that's a tab in the middle).

This tells Windows to go to 207.68.131.20 instead of www.download.windowsupdate.com. 207.68.131.20 is the IP address of the correct site.

4. Save the file and try Windows Update again. It should work (well, it does for me).

Enjoy!

That worked! Wow! thanks....

It happened to my system before, and I think it went away on its own....Does anyone know why this happens? What do the rest of the non-neowin users do? =)

OK.

why....

3. Go to the bottom of the file and add this:

207.68.131.20 www.download.windowsupdate.com

This didn`t worked for me, it sayd there`s an DNS error in download.windowsupdate.com.

Which line i should ad to the file?:

207.68.131.20 www.download.windowsupdate.com

OR

207.68.131.20 www.download.microsoft.com

It finds all the updates, but when you "review and install" and hit the install now button, IE freezes.

Any ideas ?

UPDATE

seems to have stopped doing that now, but im still having trouble. Got most of the updates by downloading them one at a time, but theres a few i still cant get (the 1st critical and 1st and 2nd other).

Now i noticed that having failed to download on the first try, they seem doomed to fail forevermore. I tried cleaning my cache using "Internet options" under control panel, but what am i missing ?

Cheers, your such a helpful bunch of folk round here !

Those of you who cannot update, please make sure that cryptograhic services is enabled as 'Automatic' this will allow the updates from the Microsoft site to download. I could not download any updates before as I had disabled this feature in the 'services.msc' just run this command and see any of you have by mistake disabled or set it to manual.

U could also try to use the windows xp corporate update site. Here, u can download the updates in a conventional way.

What is the address for the Windows Corporate Update site?

Just to reiterate, the line you should add is this:

207.68.131.20 www.download.windowsupdate.com

Make sure you put a tab in the middle.

Also, clear out your cache in IE, turn off any ad-blocking software like Webwasher and make turn off any proxies you're using. Then run Windows Update again.

I just tried to download a random driver off the site and it works fine, using the fix above. Taking it out means that the site doesn't work.

You can get to the corporate site like this:

1. Run Windows Update as usual.

2. Click on the "Personalize Windows Update" link on the left.

3. You should see a tick box entitled "Display the link to the Windows Update Catalog under See Also". Turn this on and click on "Save Settings".

4. A link "Windows Update Catalog" should appear on the left hand side of the Windows Update site. Click on this. This will take you to the part of the site where you can download the updates and apply them manually. It splits the updates into OS updates (e.g. the Application Compatibility patch) and driver updates (e.g. Soundblaster driver update).

I have a legit 2600 version of XP pro. It was working earlier this week, and then it suddenly stoped. They changed the link, and must use different servers for different downloads, or maybe the DNS is not updated on one of the hops to the server. Anyways, it happened before, and it went away on its own, so it is not a user error.

I punched it in on my browser, and it took me to an Under Construction page...

I got 207.68.131.20 by doing a "tracert" (from the command line) to download.windowsupdate.com. Doing another trace just now shows the site as "207.46.106.80" which appears to just be another WU site.
