This is on my ISP's newsgroup, aparently from Microsoft:

Hi,

It appears that you are not able to connect to our download servers through

your ISP's DNS server. I have a procedure that will bypass your ISP's DNS

server to see if you can connect to our download servers.

Go into your Dial Up Networking (double click on mycomputer and then Dial Up

Networking) right click on the dial-up account you are getting these errors

from and select properties. Click on the Server Types tab. Click on the

TCP/IP Settings button then click on "Specify name server address" button.

In the Primary DNS box enter 198.6.1.1 and in the secondary DNS enter

198.6.1.2 click OK.

Try connecting to windows update and let me know the results

Thank you Eric Brodish

Change this back when you are done to stop future problems.

Thanks wd40. I have a question. At work there are 200 of us sharing a single T1. Downloads suck. The regular windows update hangs during download most of the time. Is the corporate website going to let me download the updates without installing them so I can have them to install on other computers?

Try pinging those numbers, or better yet, scan the whole subnet. If that's not enough, try resolving them all.
