Wired Home Network Setup

Recommended Posts

Hey people,

I want to set up a wired home network so I am going to run wires but I wanted your opinions on how it should be done and what hardware is required. I have five areas in total I want to network. Four rooms and One family area with one port in each area. Room 3 will be the node since it has the modem already there. I also have an Linksys e3000 4 port router there too.

Well clearly your going to need another switch, since 4 ports not going to be able to do 5 rooms ;)

Any 5 port switch will do, I would prob go gig switch - can be dumb or smart. You might want to look for a smart switch, something like the gs108t which is 8 port smart switch would work great with room for growth and the ability to do rate limiting, port mirroring, vlans, etc. etc. If you ever want to do any of that sort of thing - around $100 vs $50 for a dumb switch, etc.

Other than you just need the cables. Cat 5e will work just fine for gig, but sure you can do 6 if you want. Then if you want to make it pretty hardware to put in ports in the wall, etc.
