+chorpeac MVC Posted September 30, 2003 MVC Share Posted September 30, 2003 Ok so who has one and what type? Share some personal experiences if you would! I am about to get one through Cox Cable. The main selling points for me where the builtin PIP (even though I have it on the TV) and the ability to record two shows at the same time. Now this thing is going to be cool right!! I'm psyched... tscallions
I have the Scientific-Atlantic Explorer 8000 DVR from Time Warner for $6.95 per month. It still has bugs but nothing that prevents it from getting the job done. They are supposedly working on a firmware that is to enable all the featuers of the 8000 by years end, but I am not holding my breath. The one option that I would really, really, like is to be able to output to my PC so I could burn to DVD. But since the box is provided by Time Warner I highly doubt that feature will ever be activated. Enjoy your new DVR.

Tim Dorr Veteran Posted September 30, 2003 Veteran Share Posted September 30, 2003 Damn, I want that two channel recording.. I was looking at the standalone units, but they can only tune one thing at once. You can't even watch somethign else while recording without some special hooking up of things... AndyD
Hmm. I have a couple of questions for those who have standalone units... 1. I remember hearing on TechTV that Tivo was going to limit network connectivity. Is this true with their newer units?? I want to be able to hook this thing up to my network and do what I want with the shows. I would love to get it connected wirelessly. Has anyone tried doing that? 2. Also, what about upgrading the Tivo to higher capacity drives? I'm sure I can save money by buying one on my own. 3. Any websites that are dedicated to all that is Tivo?? "No-- TiVo DVRs (work with cable, satellite, antenna) cannot record more than one show at a time due to hardware limitations. You can, however, watch a prerecorded program while your TiVo DVR is recording another live program. (Try that with a VCR!) It is possible that future-generation TiVo DVRs may contain a second tuner, which would allow you to record two shows simultaneously." Taken from Tivo's website. It looks like you can watch a recorded show while recording another. Or are they making it seem more simple than it really is?
Timan Veteran Posted September 30, 2003 Veteran Share Posted September 30, 2003 1. tivo series 2 got a usb port (where you can buy a network usb adapter) and a modem jack, so for tivo to do its daily updates it needs to call home via modem, unless you have it hooked up with the network usb thing... 2. / 3. the only tivo site you need www.tivocommunity.com

It looks like you can watch a recorded show while recording another. Or are they making it seem more simple than it really is? I got mine last night. I love it. I picked up a unit from Cox themselves. It works wonderfully. It is easy to set up and the guide and UI for the device is superb. I was able to record two shows at the same time. It has two tuners built in. That also allows for PIP without a TV that supports the feature. If you are going to get it from Cox cable, then get theirs. The DVR(tivo) unit is built into their digital cable box. They say you can use a tivo or replay unit, but then you have to seperate program guides to look at, Cox's and the tivo manufacturers. Plus $9.99/mo is better than tivo's price, and I think you get more features from the Cox unit. I just wanted to share some more information. Go get one if you can, they are so much better than VCRs in too many different aspects!!!
AndyD
That's very cool. Unfortunately, my cable company, RCN, is behind the times. They are always behind other cable companies in providing new features. I called them up yesterday and they don't have any plans on releasing one any time soon :(
+chorpeac MVC Posted October 1, 2003 Author MVC Share Posted October 1, 2003 Damn dude, sorry to hear about that. You can still get the tivo or replaytv system though. You just won't have the dual tuner at this time.

It looks like you can watch a recorded show while recording another. Or are they making it seem more simple than it really is? DirecTV DVR with TiVo CAN record two channels at once, while simultaneously watching something else that had been previously recorded. I should know, I do it all the time. Naturally you will have to have two cables running from the satellite dish. The DirecTV DVR with TiVo is $249 or less, and since DirecTV handles most of the back-end, the monthly service fee is only $4.95 rather than $12.95 with stand-along units. Also, the direct digital stream is recorded so there is no D-A conversion, so the image quality is the exact same as you would get watching live TV.
