Thoughts on some new network equipment

Recommended Posts

Finally going to build out my server cabinet a bit and I am wanting to replace my crap dlink that I have. I am look at these two pieces:

8-port switch for future expansion: http://www.frys.com/product/6877776?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

Wireless-N dual band router: http://www.frys.com/product/6915747?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

Both get good reviews. Good picks or should I go with something else?

Why would you not want at least a smart switch? Maybe something like GS108T it cost a bit more, but got pretty much all the features of a fully managed switch.

Not really an upgrade, those are between dumb switch and the smart switch. Just look at the spec sheets to what supports more -- but sure that would be better than just a dumb switch to be sure.

The 't' model is the smart switch: http://www.netgear.com/business/products/switches/smart-switches/GS108T.aspx

The 'e' model is not a full-managed switch but is not a dumb switch by any means: http://www.netgear.com/business/products/switches/prosafe-plus-switches/GS108E.aspx

I think for my setup as it stands now the 'e' model is exactly what I need.

yes it would be better than just a dumb switch, but to me for a few dollars more you could have the T that does way more. ;)

But yeah I agree the E would be a good choice for the home market looking to have something a bit more than just a dumb switch and you would prob never need all the features the actual smart switch provides.

Not sure if you US or not, but since you linked to frys -- here is link to that e switch over at newegg, they are running a rebate so price is $60 24 cheaper than at frys

For a bit extra you could get a fully managed 24 port + 4 fiber (referb) i wouldn't even consider buying consumer level network components with the market awash with eol products. Yeah its a risk as i found out (do your research beforehand) but you wont find anything like it on newegg without paying a few hundred more.

Can't really talk about the switch, but I have the V1 version of the E4200 router and have to say I'm incredibly pleased with it. Considering the number of antennae it has in it, I was expecting signal strength to be greatly increased, but it wasn't. What it *IS* incredibly good it though is making that signal extremely stable and increasing the range of it substantially. I can go almost half way down the road before I lose wifi signal these days. Was well worth the investment - best router I've owned by a long shot.

Ebay, electronics recycling etc with the recession theres never been as many switches out there.

A quick search revealed a PowerConnect 5324 (20 gigabit + 4 gigabit or 4 fiber) for EUR 114.20.
