#Michael
Finally going to build out my server cabinet a bit and I am wanting to replace my crap dlink that I have. I am look at these two pieces: 8-port switch for future expansion: http://www.frys.com/product/6877776?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG Wireless-N dual band router: http://www.frys.com/product/6915747?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG Both get good reviews. Good picks or should I go with something else?

+BudMan MVC Posted December 18, 2011 MVC Share Posted December 18, 2011 Why would you not want at least a smart switch? Maybe something like GS108T it cost a bit more, but got pretty much all the features of a fully managed switch. offroadaaron 1 Share

Netgear actually has a upgrade to that one: http://www.frys.com/product/6515913?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG Looks good though....might go with it. goretsky 1 Share
+BudMan MVC Posted December 19, 2011 MVC Share Posted December 19, 2011 Not really an upgrade, those are between dumb switch and the smart switch. Just look at the spec sheets to what supports more -- but sure that would be better than just a dumb switch to be sure.

The 't' model is the smart switch: http://www.netgear.com/business/products/switches/smart-switches/GS108T.aspx The 'e' model is not a full-managed switch but is not a dumb switch by any means: http://www.netgear.com/business/products/switches/prosafe-plus-switches/GS108E.aspx I think for my setup as it stands now the 'e' model is exactly what I need. goretsky 1 Share
+BudMan MVC Posted December 19, 2011 MVC Share Posted December 19, 2011 yes it would be better than just a dumb switch, but to me for a few dollars more you could have the T that does way more. ;) But yeah I agree the E would be a good choice for the home market looking to have something a bit more than just a dumb switch and you would prob never need all the features the actual smart switch provides. Not sure if you US or not, but since you linked to frys -- here is link to that e switch over at newegg, they are running a rebate so price is $60 24 cheaper than at frys http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833122397 goretsky 1 Share
PhilT
For a bit extra you could get a fully managed 24 port + 4 fiber (referb) i wouldn't even consider buying consumer level network components with the market awash with eol products. Yeah its a risk as i found out (do your research beforehand) but you wont find anything like it on newegg without paying a few hundred more. majortom1981
I was going to mention hp switches but for some strange reason everysite i look at does not carry the cheaper stuff anymore.
kinetix63 Veteran Posted December 19, 2011 Veteran Share Posted December 19, 2011 Can't really talk about the switch, but I have the V1 version of the E4200 router and have to say I'm incredibly pleased with it. Considering the number of antennae it has in it, I was expecting signal strength to be greatly increased, but it wasn't. What it *IS* incredibly good it though is making that signal extremely stable and increasing the range of it substantially. I can go almost half way down the road before I lose wifi signal these days. Was well worth the investment - best router I've owned by a long shot. PhilT
Ebay, electronics recycling etc with the recession theres never been as many switches out there. A quick search revealed a PowerConnect 5324 (20 gigabit + 4 gigabit or 4 fiber) for EUR 114.20.
majortom1981
IF your looking for a so called smart switch look for the 1810-8 hp procurve . It has 8 gigabit ports , can be powered by POE , vlans and qos. Also it has a lifetime warranty.
