badb0y
hello guys, i have TimeWarner 15Mbps connection at my home. when i do download speed tests, results are quite good like; 14Mbps - 15Mbps. Qutie good speeds even during peek hours i get 5Mbps - 10Mbps. Now the problem is, when i try open websites they dont load completely or dont load at all, i ve tried with all different browsers, cleared DNS cache, disabled antivirus/ firewall. BUT when i try to download some file, i get full speeds. again when i try to open download some file i get full speeds but when i try to open any site they dont load and take ages (with all browsers, clearing dns cache, disabaling antivirus/ firewall) ALSO this is a laptop and is connected directly to modem via LAN cable (no wireless) thanks! sc302 Veteran Posted December 21, 2011 Veteran Share Posted December 21, 2011 have you tried changing your dns server to something like 4.2.2.2 or 4.2.2.1 or 8.8.8.8? It could very well be that your ISP dns servers are hosed. DNS provides your initial connection to the website in question, if there are multiple links on sites it constantly looks to your dns for resolution (this happens with pics and ads on different web sites). If it takes too long to get you the link address, you will see what you are seeing. Trying a different DNS usually fixes the issue esp if it is happening on different browsers. Go into your network properties to change dns settings on your computer.

sc302 Veteran Posted December 21, 2011 Veteran Share Posted December 21, 2011 You don't understand what dns is....let me explain. DNS is like a phone book. You/your computer puts in a request...say www.bank1.com. Your computer then goes out to the dns server and asks where is www.bank1.com, the dns server does a quick search and responds with an internet address of 65.65.65.65 and your computer goes there. There is no other information being transfered to the dns server or back to your computer, the most that can happen is that the dns server keeps a log of who requests what at what time. your banking information does not get transfered to the dns server, any of your personal information on your computer does not get transfered to the dns server. So yes it is safe to use google dns or any dns for that matter, all it is is a phone book that your computer makes queries against.

k22
You might check to see if your ISP is providing multiple DNS servers to you via DHCP. If the primary DNS server that they are advertising is having issues, you might try the alternate ones. They would probably give you a faster response time than the public google or opendns ones because they would be more likely to be local to you. If the alternate ones provided by your ISP have issues as well, then I would stick with the public ones recommended here...

k22
the problem was with the modem provided by TWC. i got it replaced and new one is working great... but thanks for all suggestions ;) Glad you got it sorted. I had this problem once before - was seeing a bunch of packet loss just pinging the default gateway on the WAN.
