If you subtract something from one side you also have to subtract it from the other side. You can't just make up your own rules.

That's funny since it was at school that I was taught that 0.999..... = 1, and the school I goto happens to be one of the best in the country.

Was it an algebra class where they told you that? Because according to calculus .999... does not equal 1, seeing as calculus is a higher math then algebra I can only come to the conclusion algebra is wrong in this instance.

yep that's right.

.9 repeating definately is not equal to 1. maybe to someone in algebra they could think it is due to the whole X/9 = .X repeating thing so therefor you would assume that 9/9 could equal .9 repeating when in fact it equals 1 and nothing else. it's just common sense.

Wow I understand the concept that the people that say "No" are coming from because it took me a year just to agree with it myself, but I still believe those that say No are incorrect, because in order for that to be possible you would have to have

Infinite number of 0s and a 1 at the end to be the difference between the 2 actual numbers.

And that in itself is contradictory to the idea of infinity.

Is it hard to swallow that you cannot have .00 [going on infintely]......1

And therefore if there is no difference between the 2 numbers they must be the same :ninja:

Because im not gonna lie im in high school and havent taken calculus yet, and therefore i dont understand why teachers who teach .999 [Repeating] would lie to us, without even mentioning the fact that calculus nulifies this theorem.

I'm going to go through Dazzla's proof step by step to see if I understand it

x = .9999999999

multiply both sides by 10 to get:

10x = 9.9999999999

then subtract x from both sides, but since x = .9999999999 either value can be subtracted, so subtract x from the left side and .9999999999 from the right side:

10x -1x = 9.9999999999 - .9999999999

9x = 9

then divide both sides by 9:

9x/9 = 9/9

x = 1

and from above x= .999999999 = 1 so then yes I see how .9999999999 = 1

my first thought is that .9 repeating is similar to one of the first things you learn in calculus, limits. which is basically saying that certain functions can get infinitely closer to a number but can never reach it. i always had a really hard time accepting this, but that's beside the point. (i took 1 semester of calculus in high school...dropped it at the semester)

after looking around on the web, i've seen some reputable seeming sites refer to whole numbers with a repeating 9 as being equal. for example, wolfram research:

look down to the part that says "Numbers such as 0.5 are sometimes regarded as "...

(it basically says "0.5 = 0.50000 (zero repeating) = 0.49999 (9 repeating)")

i think this goes against most anything i've been taught, heh. it just seems that 0.99999 repeating would get infinitely closer to 1, but never reach it. i must learn more!! :unsure:

You are all taking theories into account. I do not care what anyone has to say about repeating 0's with a one at the end. "if it's repeating zero's how can it ever have a one at the end" well, if it's repeating 9's how can it ever be 1? You are all trying to play the theories of mathematics to prove that repeating 9's equals 1, but you rule out the obvious answers. Granted that the difference between repeating 9's and 1 are so minisculy close that it's easiest to just say that they are equal, but anyone with common sense can look at it and see that they are NOT equal. Put it on a graph and you will see that it never reaches 1. It comes close, but never will reach it.

ok open up calc.exe

you should probably be in scientific mode, View | Scientific

copy the following string to the clipboard, then ctrl-v it in calculator:

(1/3)*10=

(betcha didn't know you could do that!!)

ok now that we're on the same page, CLEAR THE CALC (hit Esc or press the red button that says C) and then copy this and paste it:

((1/3)*10)-(1/3)=

the display will say 3.

now CLEAR THE CALC and copy this and paste it into the calc:

((1/3)*10)-(1/3)-(1/3)-(1/3)-(1/3)-(1/3)-(1/3)-(1/3)-(1/3)-(1/3)=

this is 3.333repeating * 10, minus .333repeating, 9 times

the display will say 0.33333333333333333333333333333333

for extra fun, CLEAR THE CALC and copy this and paste it into the calc:

3-(1/3)-(1/3)-(1/3)-(1/3)-(1/3)-(1/3)-(1/3)-(1/3)=

this is the whole number 3 minus .333repeating, 8 times

the display will still say 0.33333333333333333333333333333333
