I dropped my Galaxy Nexus on a concrete floor from about 1.5 metres (accident of course) and not a scratch. :p

True, however i've dropped my iphone 4 several times, obviously unintentionally... slightly but just slightly bent the metal frame ( less than 1cm, barely even noticeable).

You really can't compare though, what you can do with one and what you can do with the other.

Old Phones = built to be tough, and work,

New phones = Built with less quality, due to that incase of drop or easily caused damage you'll have to fork out some cash to get it repaired = manufacturer/shop/whatever earns more money.

^ Depends on the use of the phone these days. Defy+ for example is built to last and still is a great smartphone.

We'll it goes for the more greedy and popular brands..

I remember having a Siemens* a couple of years ago, that I dropped from knee-height, after that, the sound was ruined..
