A vast phishing attack has broken out, beginning on or around Christmas day, with e-mails being sent with the subject ?Apple update your Billing Information.? These well-crafted e-mails could fool many new Apple users, especially those who may have found an iPhone, iPod or iMac under their Christmas tree, and set up accounts with the iTunes Store or the Mac App Store for the first time. The messages claim to come from ?appleid@id.apple.com.? Here?s what the content looks like:

If you click on the link in the message, you will be taken to a realistic looking sign-in page, then, after entering your Apple ID and password, you?ll be taken to a page asking you to update your account profile, notably entering your credit card information. Again, this page looks realistic, and many of the elements it contains are taken from Apple?s own web pages....

A couple of days ago, after downloading an app from Apple store, I got the following mail from Apple :

from :

Apple

do_not_reply@apple.com

to: me

Dear xxxxxx,

Your Apple ID ,xxxxxx@gmail.com, was just used to download Flare from the App Store on a computer or device that had not previously been associated with that Apple ID.

If you initiated this download, you can disregard this email. It was only sent to alert you in case you did not initiate the download yourself.

If you did not initiate this download, we recommend that you go toiforgot.apple.com

to change your password, then see Apple ID: Tips for protecting the security of your account

for further assistance.

Regards,

Apple

It is the first time I got such a mail from Apple.

It says you downlaoded an app on a foreign computer/ipad/iphone that your account isn't known on. They are just checking it was you, or your logged into a friends computer/a friend used your account without consent.

No, it was not a foreign computer. It was my PC which is authorized.

Perhaps it has to do with the authorisation of the iTunes App Store being somewhat different from the Mac App Store.
