I can't believe Windows still needs to be reinstalled when one piece of malware hits.

This was back in 2006 -- sorry to tell you the viruses/malware/crapware has gotten BETTER ;)

"When you are dealing with rootkits and some advanced spyware programs, the only solution is to rebuild from scratch. In some cases, there really is no way to recover without nuking the systems from orbit," Mike Danseglio, program manager in the Security Solutions group at Microsoft, said in a presentation at the InfoSec World conference here.

Offensive rootkits, which are used hide malware programs and maintain an undetectable presence on an infected machine, have become the weapon of choice for virus and spyware writers and, because they often use kernel hooks to avoid detection, Danseglio said IT administrators may never know if all traces of a rootkit have been successfully removed.

Its always easier to hide than to be detected.. Should of saved yourself a lot of time if you would of just reinstalled from the get go. Clearly you were infected, and clearly the major players were not finding anything. Then just NUKE it and be done -- every minute you continue to dick with it, is a minute wasted not having a clean system back. Even if you found some tool that removed the symptom you are seeing -- are you going to be 100% its gone?

No -- so just wipe it and move on with your life!

Agreed with Budman. Companies do the same with servers, just 'remove' the virus/backdoor, update the system and then they wonder why they get hacked again very quickly, because the person that put it on the PC in the first place knows a damn hell lot more about hiding things than you do.

Should probably just wait until the Windows 8 public beta is released in February before reinstalling Windows.

What???

Nuke the freaking thing already -- your on day 2, here is the thing if you can not clean the thing in a couple of hours. Nuke It!

Restore your files either from backup, or better yet just install your CLEAN image that is setup. And your golden, what that takes all of 20 minutes to do.. What you don't have a clean image of your system taken after you got it setup the way you like??

Maybe you should spend a couple of hours doing that for the next time.
