rageagainstmachine
Just set up WHS 2011 on an old laptop, works great, got my TV coneected to it via the router very happy. I am however concerned about how much power its consuming when not in use. I know there is a power option to sleep the laptop after x mins etc, but is there an option to wake it up on network activity, I,e, access attempt to its shared folders? There seems to be a paid addon that does just that called lights-out, but id rather not pay for this if a free solution is available? Any ideas or tips? cheers
xendrome
Don't think that is possible, it can Wake On Lan, but you will have to send a Magic Packet to it. It's a laptop, so it probably isn't drawing anymore then 90W max, that's on a full load. Honestly I wouldn't worry about it... probably costing you very little per day to run. MFH
Lights-Out is available as a "community" edition, that's free of charge.
Roger H. Veteran Posted January 5, 2012 Veteran Share Posted January 5, 2012 Well i had mine going to sleep with WHS v1 at 1am and waking at 4pm since i'd get home after then. It defeated the purpose of being available when not at home though so since i upgraded to WHS 2011 and power lights-out no longer included with my software (TechNet version) i've just left it runnning. I have a Lenovo D400 and a router and cable modem hooked up to APC BackUPS Pro and it shows it's using about 45-50watts. With my current energy ratings - i'd need to leave it on for 200 hours before it costs me 10.6 CENTS. So that's about 8-9days. At the end of the month leaving all those devices on will cost me about about 50 CENTS. So yeah, i gave up. As for a laptop however, they generally use about the same amount on idle, shutting off the LCD will use even less power (say 20-30watts) and therefore cost even less to run. Remind you, my server has 3 x WD 2TB Greens in there and 1 x 1TB Seagate 7200RPM drive.
