Adding new router to network

Recommended Posts

So I recently bought a linksys E4200 and wanted to make sure I'm setting it up right without double NAT. I just did a quick set-up last night, haven't really had time to adjust all the settings yet.

I have a 2wire DSL modem/router combo provided by my ISP. I don't see any way to put it into bridge-mode. What I've done is connected a LAN port from the 2wire to the linksys WAN port. I disabled DHCP on the 2wire and set up DMZ to forward everything to the linksys. I also stopped the modem from establishing a PPPoE connection and let the linksys do that.

Would it be better to let the modem establish the PPPoE connection and assign the linksys an IP, or does that create a Double NAT?

If I do that, what IPs should I assign the router and modem? Right now the linksys defaults to 192.168.1.1 and the modem default is 192.168.2.1

Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Which 2Wire is it? It seems if the Linksys is able to do the PPPoE then the 2Wire must be in Bridged mode. As for the DMZ thing, you can just turn off the firewall on the 2Wire instead?

It's (probably) better for 2Wire to establish the connection and then the Linksys is just on another subnet from the main handing out DHCP addresses and do the actual routing. Post the model number though of the 2Wire that way we can check to see if it's possible, if not then let the Linksys do the PPPoE and DHCP and you'll be all good.

The model is 2wire 2701. It has a custom firmware from my ISP which is pretty much locked down. I don't want to go messing with custom firmware for it. They probably have the ability to overwrite the firmware themselves anyway since when I logged in yesterday the interface was updated so it seems they have the ability to push firmware updates from their side.

There is no option to disable the firewall, so that's why I enabled DMZ. There's not even really an option to stop the PPPoE connection, I just entered the wrong credentials on the modem to let the linksys establish the connection. Ideally, I would like the modem to establish the PPPoE connection, but like I said I'm not sure if that would create a double NAT.

Well the way you have it then seems to be the only way it will work without the double NAT. You can I guess disable basically all routing on on the Linksys as well and let the 2Wire manage it all. The Linksys would just provide 5Ghz radios (i'm guessing) or gigabit ports. Seems like those 2 options are your only options. :)

I also stopped the modem from establishing a PPPoE connection and let the linksys do that.

I always just assumed that the router connecting to the ISP sets up the PPPoE link. Can this be done before on another router?
