Weird lines coming up with a new install of Windows 7

Question

This is actually a friend's computer. After installing windows 7 he gets these weird lines with a blue background at random. Although sometimes they seem to happen when he clicks something or is opening a new program. Web browsing is very annoying with this. I've tried virtually everything, deleting video drivers, updating them - nothing seems to work. And this is on a fresh install of windows 7. I've attached a file of what the screen looks. I can't seem to take a screenshot of it. What is the problem?

PS: Here are his specs:

MS Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit SP1

Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 @ 1.86 Ghz (no overclocking)

2.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 400 MHz

ASUSTek P5B Socket 775

256 MB GeForce 7900 GT/GTO (with DVI connected to monitor)

313 GB Seagate SATA HD

BENQ DVD LS DW1655 Drive

edit: here's a link to a picture of it: http://s9.postimage.org/9xko4b8n3/photo.jpg

Safe mode (*I think*) only boots the basic system driver. It could be the drivers. Have you looked to see if the video card is properly seated?

I always download new drivers and never have a problem. go to nvidia.com and make sure you have the latest.

And yes, safe mode only boots the basic driver but if the card wasnt seated correctly, you would/should still notice the same issues in safe mode.

Hm. Is there another PCI-e slot on the mainboard? Try switching the card into a new slot if you can.

even on old and new drivers, it does the same thing. when they're not installed, like in safe mode, everything's ok.

So you wend to nvidia.com and installed the newest drivers for your card?

Those boards only have 1 PCIE slot.

unfortunately my friend unknowingly kept his case locked so I can't open it :(

that's right. I installed "285.62-desktop-win7-winvista-32bit-english-whql.exe" and yes I did choose the right version.

for what it's worth, the weird screen eventually does go away - after about 10 seconds or so.

Only thing else you can try is removing the card and putting it back in. And then removing the cables from the monitor/PC and reconnecting them. Otherwise, try a different card.

Also, did you apply all the updates for Windows 7?

Agreed. Have your friend open up the case when he can and make sure everything looks OK inside the case.

when I can unlock the case, I will try that. yes all the updates have been installed.

Ok, did a google search and seems others have been having the same probs with the 7900 cards in Win7. One site says to decrease your color depty for 32 to 16 and stablilized their issue.

Right click desktop....choose screen resolution....advanced settings...click monitor tab...and then change from 32bit to 16bit...reboot.

Reading a lot more people having the same problems with the same vid card. Probably need to invest in a new card.

https://www.google.c...lient=firefox-a

So changing the color depth may be a temp solution to get things working for now.

If you can't get a screenshot of it, it's something that is happening from the graphics card onward (post processing?). Try booting to a linux live cd and see if anything happens, as it should have full graphics drivers vs safe-mode's basic ones.

But techbeck's find might also explain why things work in safe mode... IIRC, it defaults to 16-bit.

Gonna look like crud in 16-bit, and you can't do aero in 16-bit.

yup, that's the same problem I have. Ok I will browse through that thread and see if I can change the timings on the card. I don't think running in 16-bit will be desirable. thanks for link.

I can't believe this issue hasn't been resolved yet. oh well

Its an old card...so probably wont be. Just invest in a new card. You can get a better one for not that much money.

Make sure you uninstall the drivers on your friend's computer first. I hope your friend is ok with this.... :-)

so I finally managed to fix the problem. turns out hard flashing the BIOS was way too much work for my liking, especially for this old of a video card. so I just dropped the memory frequency of the card via software. everything seems to be ok :)

I had a 7900GT and it just crapped out, artifacts got worse on screen when it got hotter and stop errors occurred when pushing it into 3D mode, also DWM restarting all the time (loosing aero for a moment) = Replacement to a 9800GT :woot: best thing i ever did!
