Navan
since this is the internet section, I think it's the appropriate section for my question. I want to purchase a domain name, and I'm certainly not going to use GoDaddy for it. Which company will not come under the SOPA? I have little to no knowledge about SOPA, but I just know I want to stay away from a company based in the US which will have to comply with their Laws. Where do you live if you want to stay away from a US company? If you buy a .com abroad its still going to be regulated by a US company Verizon I believe

Not that my website is going to be piracy related, just blogging. So SOPA will only keep US users from visiting a site but that domain wont be taken down? No, SOPA can keep all users from visiting a site if the domain is under US regulation(If the domain is regulated by US) I think Namecheap is the next best. +BudMan MVC Posted January 5, 2012 MVC Share Posted January 5, 2012 Yeah I migrated my domains from godaddy to namecheap -- really happy with the namecheap inteface vs the bombardment of upsell you had to click through when doing anything on godaddy. There was a coupon code going around about sopa and migration from godaddy to use on namecheap. Migration was cheap!! And only took less than 5 hours to have my domains on the new registrar. WolfieZero
Another one for Namecheap. They are doing free WHOIS privacy at the moment but are anti-SOPA. Also, another nice feature is they can do most popular currencies. Plus, the site isn't half bad to look at; truck load easier than GoDaddy (which I still moving from). primexx
you can be subject to or indirectly affected by a bunch of jurisdictions. 1. the one you're in 2. the one your registrar is in 3. the one that the organization managing the TLD is in - which is the US for all the common extensions 4. the one your hosting company is in 5. the one(s) that any servers along the way is in so it's kind of pointless to go out-of-States if you're personally in the US or if you register a US-managed domain name. ultimately everything is managed by ICANN but a different regional registry should offer much more protection than a simple .com (for example) there are very few actual good choices for internet service outside the US, unfortunately. I spent quite a bit of time searching for the same thing just a couple of days ago. with that said, gandi.net (in france) looks like a popular out-of-US one. Hover (Tucows) seems to be based in Canada. keep in mind that you also need to pick a good hosting provider if you want to make it hardest for them to get at you. Yes .com .org, .biz and .net (amongs a few others) are all regulated by ICANN He was close by mentioning Verizon :b because the registry operator for these two is VeriSign, of course, regulated by the ICANN.
