Video Editing Software

Question

I am looking to edit the phone videos I make. I need to be able to rotate, trim, and crop. Moviemaker can do all but the cropping. Anyone know of a product free, open source, or pay that is good and can do these three basic things on Windows 7 64bit?

These are not working that well. i am trying to crop a video taken by an iPhone 4, where it has black bars on the left and right. When I try the crop, it complains the image size is wrong. WHERE IS THE VIDEO EDITOR FOR GRANDPA? hahaha

More like what is the consumer editor that has native iPhone 4 support?

For a lot of light and medium duty editing tasks I use Corel (formerly Ulead) VideoStudio Pro X4, which has native iPhone support and can edit, crop. add effects to and export most modern formats. It can also burn the edit to files, DVD & BR.

There is a free trial you can play with, and because the current X4 build is to be replaced by X5 soon it's on sale pretty cheap.

Another very good option is Adobe Premiere Elements.

Fair warning: having a decent editor can be addictive

Thanks for the links. I am trying out these recommendations and I am finding a theme. It appears most of them are intended for people who are trying to do those cutesy productions. Transitions and story lines... blah blah. If I was interested in creating productions like this, then some of these would be perfect.

I'm more looking for a pure editor.

Yeah I think I checked this out, but it didn't accept .wmv files as input. Unfortunately I saved the movies in .wmv format. I'll check it out again though.

Nope, vDub was giving me issues about the wmv codec. I grabbed the wmv plugin, but this wasn't working. Hmm..

Freemake Video Converter:

Cut, Join, Rotate, Limit size, Adjust to aspect ratioCut video parts from your file. Flip or rotate video. Join several videos into one file, add transitions between parts. Fit the output file size to any limit (e.g. 700 Mb, 1.4 Gb, 4.7 Gb). Adjust output video to the established aspect ratio: add black bars, stretch, zoom, auto-adjust.

Well if the format of the file is the issue just convert to a format your editor will work with. There are plenty of free/opensource tools for converting from one format to the other - but they might not always have the editing features you want.

I am a fan of virtualdub, its cropping tool is real easy (null transform), you set your x1,x2,y1,y2 pixels it shows you right on the preview what your cropping. Then process and shazam new cropped video.

If you want the video now in some other format, just convert to that format you want using your favorite tool for that.

Its quite common that your not going to find a tool that does every little thing you want to do, so some times you have to use multiple tools.

I use Avanti-GUI

http://avanti.arrozcru.com/

It will do conversion, resizing, cropping and padding all at once. You can have different values on each side. I can't see rotate though.

But it's not made for editing in time. I use VirtualDub for that, also for changing brightness. It can do rotate and flip with the Video-Filters menu.

This is doing it the hard way because the video has to be converted to a format that VirtualDub can process. Then converted again to the desired format.

There must be a better program.
