You need local admin rights to shut it down, which tends to mean you need a domain.

If you do have local admin rights, a VERY fast (and totally dangerous untidy) way to reboot a PC is to terminate the process winlogon. Its funny as f*ck :)

Open up computer management. Right click on computer management local and connect to the machine you want. Once connected. Right click on the same spot. Go to properties -> advanced -> startup and recovery -> settings -> shutdown. You can shut it down there as long as you have admin rights.

grab pstools from sysinternals.com - they have a shutdown/restart/logoff commandline tool, that allows shutdown remote machines. And even send user info if needed.

in the Windows 2000 Resource Kit there's a utility called "shutdown.exe"

its built into Windows XP Pro.

Im not on a domain, but running workgroup with 2 winXP machines shairing files. Can i make a shortcut to a command-line-shutdown-instant-kill-thingie for my other PC which dad leaves on and dozes off watching movies... Say i put this hypothetical shortcut in the shared files area, by executing it, would i be killing my own machine or his?

you have to tell the shutdown.exe what you want to do, its a command line thing..

Shutdown -s <ipaddress> -f
