[UK] Zen broadband feedback - or any broadband ISP actually

Recommended Posts

Looking into that, the supplier is listed as BE http://www.ispreview.co.uk/isp_list/ISP_Detail_Fixed_Line_Broadband.php?Goscomb-Technologies-99 who are my suppliers now, so i imagine there'd be no difference.

Yes i guess more people could be on the exchange now. I think i'll give Zen a whirl all the same, as they're only 1months contract. If i don't like it, i can always return to o2 & save ?5 per month.

If you look below they have upstream packages which is what you would be on..

Your exchange has exactly the same ticks/crosses as mine. I'm convinced there isn't a single good service out there on this current setup.

I'm using Demon at the moment and they max out my line, got a 60GB rolling cap though, kind of sucks.

I've been with Zen ever since broadband became available in my area (some 7-8 years ago now I think). Never had any complaints. Speed has always been reliable and steady. The cap was 20GB but it was increased to 50GB about a year a go. It doesn't bother me as it is a limit I can see and not one buried deep into some contract (nothing is "unlimited"). I struggle to reach it despite being a fairly heavy user.

Support has always been excellent and is probably the number one reason I wouldn't move to another ISP, given many of the horror stories I hear. On the rare occasion I've had to call them up I've talked to a technically knowledgeable person... wouldn't trade that for anything these days.

I recently moved the Cambridgeshire, and the only place I could afford to live (Cambridge is a direct train from London Kings Cross station, so prices are ludicrous because of the commuters) is a village full of old timers just outside of town. I was looking up ISP's where I live and aside from the one single LLU option (which was Orange broadband, which sucks by the way), all the non-LLU prices were outrageous. Every package I looked at seemed reasonable, until you find out the "alternative" package for non-LLU customers, and they take away all the great offers (unlimited this, free that) and stick you with a huge bill for the most basic internet service you can find.

I can't help you much, since in the end I went with Orange, but the low speed (4.5Mb at the most, 2-3Mb on average) combined with severe P2P restrictions (which includes Spotify, which uses Bittorrent) makes it a horrible experience since I came from Sky's unlimited 20Mb package, and I can totally sympathise with your situation.

Now that the group therapy session has ended, I'll try and be on topic. Have you tried actually calling them? Granted, you're just going to get the standard sales bull**** that they reel off, but if you specify that they don't have unbundling in your area, and you want to know how that would affect your package, they'll probably know better than us. Just make sure you've got your BS detector going to filter out all the irrelevent sales pitch.

So back to the question - how do you work out it's ?7.50 for me?

If you don't have LLU, why do you care?

Tried http://samknows.com ?

That's your best bet (Y)

I would have recommended Sky. Been with their "up to 20/24MB" package for just over a year now. In that year, I have downloaded much. Some months it has been 700GB, others it has been as little as 50, but each month is different. Have they complained? No.

You could also look at 3G sticks for PC's. I survived on a Vodafone one for nearly 6 months.
