Leaving o2 - how? This is confusing (& i don't mean MAC codes!)

Recommended Posts

I've served my 12 month contract already. I've had 1 email from o2 suggesting that i should wait 7 days from requesting my MAC code (which i did Sunday) - so this Sunday 15th Jan i can supply my new ISP with my MAC code

Don't forget our seven day notice period. As long as you wait seven days from the date you told us you wanted to leave, we won't charge you. If you're still in a contract though, we'll have to charge you for leaving it early.

So i asked to check this out whether i'd understood correctly. And received further confusion:
Your contract with us is over so we just require seven days notice as

informed on the previous email, if you cancel within the notice period

you'll be charged for early termination fee for ?15.32.

I would advise you to please give your Mac key to your service provider,

once your line is activated from their end please call us on the number

which is mentioned on the previous email and we'll take a seven days

notice and cancel your account.

So this is telling me to give my new ISP my MAC code, let the transfer take place, THEN contact o2 telling them, and then they will serve a 7 day waiting period on me.

Which one is true? As both quotes have come direct from o2.

You're best to give your MAC to the new provider, wait until everything has changed over and then call O2 to cancel broadband service. They *should* cancel it when you transfer away but sometimes processes don't always work as well as they should and the old service can occasionally continue running. Better safe than sorry.

You can supply your MAC code to your new ISP at any time as the transfer process normally takes longer than 7 days to complete, o2 connot charge you a late fee as your are now out of your contract period, you are not obliged to give them any notice period either as your contract has been completed.

Once you contact o2 asking for your MAC code, your are in theory giving them notice that you are leaving, once you have this code and given it to your new ISP you do not have to contact o2, just pay your last bill and thats that, once thing you will get and this is to be expected, you will be contacted by o2's "Win Back Team" trying to convince you to go back with them before your cooling off period with you new ISP expires.

If your still unsure check with OfCom

O2 can be funny about leaving them.

The way I did it.....

1. Provide new ISP with MAC Code.

2. Cancel O2 Direct Debit.

3. Once the transfer has completed, call O2 and let them know.

4. If they attempt to take money or send you letters (Like they did with me) then send an email to ronan.dunne@o2.com explaining the situation and tell them you think their practices are rubbish.

5. Enjoy broadband with a better company :)
