Password Protecting a Program

Question

I am looking to enable password protection on my browser (Chrome). I have tried three different extensions, but they all have serious issues. One did not always request a password, one would not let me remove it (I had another thread about this), and Simple Startup Password is good but it does not encrypt my password, it is just plain text.

I basically just want something that will prompt me for a password when I start a program, and if I do not enter it, it will not load. This is the easiest way of keeping my girlfriend off of my accounts. I make her use IE9 and leave Chrome to me, with all usernames/passwords saved. Can this be done by some external program? Hopefully something small and not that fancy.

Thanks in advance!

I know that Firefox allows multiple profiles. That's how my laptop shared with my Girlfriend is set up. I have a profile and she has one, and we just use the same user account. It's not password protected, but it might work for you if secrecy isn't a problem. Does Chrome have anything similar?

And Should you want to use the original-- To make her use the portable create a shortcut to the portable in the same location where she normally clicks it. Change the Icon to use the Chrome Logo and rename it to take out the "shortcut to" do not forget to move the original shortcut to somewhere you know where it is. That way as far as she knows it is Chrome... but will be her chrome and will not affect or effect your chrome.

you could try sticking with convention and give her her own windows user account...

I really do not like having multiple user accounts on Windows (at least on my personal machine). Personal preference. But thank you for the suggestion.

Two things-- Why not do the following:

1. Create her a limited user.

2. (download a portable chrome and use that one)

Portableapps.com

That one runs in a directory -

http://portableapps....chrome_portable

Or run IRON PORTABLE

http://portableapps....t/iron_portable

YOu might just be able to run Iron instead of Chrome..

Very good idea, running a portable app and all. I would love to tell her to just not open the regular Chrome. :p And good point below, making it appear exactly like Chrome. I may do this.

Thanks for the links. :) I have tried that extension but it does not work very consistently. Hmmm. Also, I may consider setting up separate profiles, but can I conceal or move that user switcher icon? They are all atrocious, hehe. I know, I know, I'm just being anal here.

Secrecy is an issue, lol. :( She has some self-esteem issues and is very paranoid. She has gone through my email, Facebook messages, and Neowin posts before. I have nothing to hide, but this really irritates me. We have had big long arguments over this before, and it does not seem to matter. Luckily, she is not tech savvy so I do not have to do something very special to block her accessing specific things. I made a post about this before (don't want to bring a big long personal discussion into the software section), but I realized that Neowin was a public website, but it was still annoying having her read through every single one of my posts. Oi!

So yes, I am going to experiment with the aforementioned advice and let you all know how it went. Thanks again, everybody. :)

That is actually how I test the nightly developer build of Chrome-- I use the nightly portable version to test it.

That way it allows me to run multiple versions while still maintain the stable version.

I have gone ahead and got a portable version of Firefox for her. She does not have a browser preference, she is not tech savvy at all. Thank you for the suggestion. :) This will keep our stuff separate.

move your profile on a truecrypt (http://www.truecrypt.org/) encrypted volume. That way if you don't mount it no one will be able to access your data. I've moved my firefox and thunderbird profiles

And with what I said above, I also went ahead and encrypted my profile. Thanks. (Y)

So many complicated and unpractical solutions only because the OP doesn't want to create a second Windows account, which is the proper way of handling this issue? way to complicate things.

Not proper at all. She only occasionally browses the web. This is only a short-term solution anyways until she gets a new laptop. This is my PC and I am the boss. I do not want another user account. Aaawwwggghhh yyyeeeaaahhh!!!

The good news is that when she gets her new laptop you can transfer that portable version there so her bookmarks transfer too-- do not forget to also setup the sync when she does.
