Security Essentials takes 82 seconds to boot?!

Question

Hello all,

Recently I have noticed that my laptop is taking quite a bit longer to boot than usual.

So I found Soluto (program that counts how long your laptop takes to boot) and I found out that Security Essentials takes 82 seconds untill it's ready!

I was also quite surprised by the .NET Optimizer, I'm sure it shouldn't take that long to boot. :s

Does anyone know what can possibly cause this?

I'm going to uninstall it now and try another AV (any lightweight suggestions?) for now. :p

Hello,

My initial guess would either be a check for updates before the network connection was fully initialized or a scan of critical files. Or, it could be the report is in error. You might want to download the latest version of Microsoft Security Essentials, uninstall the currently installed copy, reboot the computer a few times and benchmark the startup process to see if Microsoft Security Essentials is indeed the culprit. After you are done, don't forget to reinstall your anti-malware software.

I don't claim to know what it's doing, but maybe it's checking the other hundred apps that are trying to run simultaneously on startup?

And who says it's not advatageous to tweak those startup programs still today?

Also, although no one recommends it anymore, depending on OS, thinking it isn't necessary or something, but when was the last time you defragged?

That other program you mentioned .Net Optimizer, IS a pig. ALL the .Net crap is!!

I'm fairly certain it's not "MSE is taking 82 seconds to boot"... I'm guessing other factors are causing MSE to take 82 seconds to complete it's boot-time activities. Even on my desktop (which doesn't have an SSD) it doesn't take that long to boot. And my laptop and tablet both have MSE running and neither take more than 20 seconds to get me to the desktop.

First thing to do, is to look at Windows event viewer: www.techrepublic.com/blog/window-on-windows/use-windows-7-event-viewer-to-track-down-issues-that-cause-slower-boot-times/3253

MSE also delayed boot time by a significant amount on an old celeron 1.7GHz laptop, that delay disappeared as soon as it was replaced with Avast. I still however use MSE on other machines and remain unaffected though.

Thanks, having uninstalled M.S.E. my boot time has decreased to about a minute, I will try to install the newest version and see what it gives.

I don't claim to know what it's doing, but maybe it's checking the other hundred apps that are trying to run simultaneously on startup?

Those 50 applications that it sees booting up are all Windows Processes which are required for Windows (System, svchost...) to even boot. If you would run the software yourself you'd see there are atleast the same amount of processes booting.

When using something like Crap Cleaner and looking at the list of items booting it will only show me 4 items. I take care of these kind of things.

I very much know most of the .NET platform is crap, but for class I'm currently working on a silverlight project in Visual Studio so I can't really let those things go.

I have also noticed that after installing Microsoft Visual Studio that performance of my laptop has greatly decreased.

Download and run malwarebytes me thinks you have critters running amok !!! :woot:

Just gave it another run (I run it weekly) it did not find anything even if it did it would have surprised me seeings as I'm quite the cautios user.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot when I have some spare-time :)

Thanks for the all the answers, I appreciate it.
