volmgrx.sys Missing or Corrupt

Question

Hello,

I have a computer that would not boot, my first thought was the MBR was corrupt so i attempted to boot onto the windows disk and repair it, when i did this however the computer blue screened and rebooted, next i decided i would try a Memtest which pointed out that the memory was faulty, ordered another DIMM and installed then attempted to boot into windows setup and repair, this time it worked and the startup options were repaired.

I am now however getting the following error

post-185680-0-30067800-1326463372.jpg

Does anyone know how i could go about repairing this, i have tried to do a windows repair which attempts to repair the problems but then says that it can't, if i take the HDD out of the machine and copy a new file over to the specified location would that fix the problem?

The operating system is Windows Vista Home Basic however i am unsure what service pack the machine has got installed.

Thanks

Rich

Yes I would say use a Linux live disk that gives you network support, then copy the file to the location, it may very well solve the problem! It's also easier than taking the drive out and having to put it back afterwards. You could also be developing bad sectors on the drive, it's possible that if there is a bad sector, it could be right where the system drivers are stored on the disk!

which could also explain why the repair fails

Hello,

Yep copied the corrupt file over to the disk using Linux Live Disk which resolved that error but now windows just attempts to boot over and over again not restarting the windows logo screen just keeps going round and round.

I have booted into a command prompt from the vista disk and am running a chkdsk C: /F /R which is doing its thing i am then going to do a sfc /scannow

The disk could be getting bad sectors, that would explain the problems.

@brando212 The chkdsk scans completed however the sfc scans would not start unable to start the service while running from the installation disk apparently.

I am not sure a fix is possible without re installing the operating system I am leaning towards a faulty hard disk
