Best and fastest UK host - anyone?

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty easy, anything that won't complicate my life hopefully, I've had nothing but problems with UKhosts, fasthosts i've just got a vendetta for, LOVE dreamhost, just their servers are US based and are too slow.

Oh and I despise cPanel!

I haved used Fasthosts on the Business (Linux) package and it is very quick and pretty zippy. However I mainly use small VP's (512mb) which seem to be very zippy and do the job right. It really depends on weather you want Linux or Windows...

Vidahost VDS (or their Cloud hosting if your site isn't overly heavy).

https://www.vidahost...ervers/overview

They're a reasonably small company (same sub-company as TSOHost) but their support has been the best I've ever dealt with. Any questions 24/7 I've got a good response within 5-10 minutes (even at 3am).

Lol, I just saw your post about fasthosts. (Is it due to the refund policy...). Dreamhost is really good feature-wise (but not location wise), since you despise cPanel you will probably want something that was made by the host itself. Try having a look at UK2. Ive heard that the best hosting however is mediatemple (havent used it myself however).

However, the best has got to be http://www.linode.com/. (However it is a VPS, there are templates for simple Apache web server setups and it is quite easy to setup a control panel, there may even be templates set up. However I am not talking from personal experience but from recommendations. They have a node in London as well which is a plus.)

MediaTemple is a great host, had no problems with them whatsoever.

Have a look at the MediaTemple (gs) service.

100GB Storage

1TB Bandwidth

Its redundant from what I can see (hosted on multiple servers)

Web-Mail

Really nice Custom Control Panel

MySQL Databases

$20 per month (Which is around 14 quid.)

Anything that won't complicate my life hopefully.

Does setting up your own server count as complicating your life? :)

I use Linode for all my sites. You get to choose your preferred Linux distro from a short-list of 9 including Ubuntu, CentOS and Fedora or if you're completely hardcore Arch or Gentoo, all of which are easily installable using the Linode Manager and then it's up to you to install and configure the software you need, be it a web server, database, mail relay, ssh, or whatever. There are plenty of guides available in the linode library to help you out. Plans start from US$19.95 a month and hosting is available in London. Highly recommended.

Linode is actually really good and it gives you the experience of playing around with my favourite OS LINUX!. In all seriousness though you will have to set up the server.etc, however there is a lot of help with that (I frequently use the Linode guides on other VPS services...)

For UK speed MediaTemple are no good. They're west coast US based.

I've had great experiences with Linode (London) and Rackspace Cloud UK (Slough). Both have been great. Amazon EC2 in Ireland is generally OK but can be a little flakey from time to time. UK2 are horrendous for VPS, slow and not good, Cheap VPS are OK, not fast, not slow but they don't exactly focus on quality.

You might want to ask this question over at Web Hosting Talk as well.

Heard good things about Linode. I have servers from Clustered.net, a bit pricey, but no downtime.

Media template had a bad rep a few years ago, not heard much since, this was due to the technology being in infancy, not sure if its improved.

PCsmart has a good rep I think

@evo_Spook You have just reminded me of a good host :) I was originally looking at Clustered a while back when I need a VPS (however they were too expensive for my budget at the time). The thing is though this thread has kind of gone from him wanting a good host with an easy to use control panel however we now just seem to be suggesting to him VPS's :)

If you're able to configure a server yourself, I'd recommend getting a Linode box set up in their London datacentre.

Great company with a great service. Switched from Slicehost about a year ago and I've never looked back.

I think VPS's is due to the money that hes speaking about, ?60 a month is a lot for shared hosting.

For normal everyday hosting, some good I'd say general shared hosts are:

http://www.hostdime.co.uk/

http://innohosting.com/

for shared hosting on these looking at

?35 a year and say

?180 a year

much less then ?60 a month

If he wants to trial some space on a clustered VPS he can PM! as you say, they're expensive and its running at a lose :-(
