Wildcard
Ok Im setup with a Netgear Router to Cox Cable. Running a ECS K7 S5A with AMD 1800+ Onboard Sound and Network. When playing games, I sometimes get lag every couple of mins. It would shoot up to 999 ping for a couple of seconds, then drop back down and everything would be fine. This would happen every couple of mins, doesn't seem to be a pattern to it. Happens on a variety of games. Tried reinstalling the onboard network drivers and reseting the Cable Modem. Anything else I can try to further diagnose this problem ? Running XP Pro with SP
snocked
You're getting the lag online or just on the entire network? You can try unhooking the router and hook cable modem directly to pc. See if lag still occurs. Also, try another nic and/or cable.
MitchShrader
Run Spybot S&D (UPDATE IT FIRST!) and see if you have any spyware trying to 'call home'.. turn OFF ms messenger if you have that.. disable any programs that might be conflicting, (realplayer, office 97, anything whatsoever in startup thats not necessary) get it down to a lean mean machine.. (if you run a background defragger, thats a possible culprit) .. once all thats done, defrag manually, dump all caches, make positive your machine is as conflict free and fine tuned as possible, and just for drill check cables, check temps, and check fans for dirt.. (won't hurt anything).. THEN test for lag..
