Setting up a guest SSID

Recommended Posts

Here's what I am looking to do. Someone I used to work with setup their wireless router with a guest network/ssid to allow users to connect. That guest ssid required people to click on ads to aquire an ip address and then click on an ad at a scheduled interval (I am guessing adsense). This setup that he had provided enough revenue to pay for his monthly cable/internet bill.

Any idea how this was done? I would like to try and set something like this up on my router.

Only way to do something like that is with a captive portal -- its a bit more involved than just a different wireless network with its own SSID. This would have to be supported by the wireless router to setup a captive portal, and then sure you could route your "guests" through a proxy and force them to click on ads.

That is about as much as I am going to say -- because the idea is offensive to me personally.. Serving up ads -- arrrghhhh!!!

If sure if you want to make some money by having a different wireless network, look to say FON

There are quite a few different captive portals software you could install on your router, if your router supports 3rd party, etc. Have to assume some of them have Ads so you could make money. Fon charges users for access to the FON network, and then you get a share - I don't believe there are any ads added to the stream. But maybe its been quite a few years since played with the FREE routers they were shipping that you could put dd-wrt on, etc. Still have one of those in my bag - makes for a nice small accesspoint when needed.
