Rathamon
alrighty, finally got a date for cable install (14th oct) :D The connection needs to be shared between 4 people living in my flat so obviously im going to require some quiet low power consumption NAT router (low power since we pay for our electricity seperatly and it would need to be going all the time). Normally this wouldnt be a problem but from what I can tell telewest seem to work on MAC address based authentification to their network , SO im guessing this will require a router which will allow me to easily discern its MAC address. Recommendations for both wired and wireless routers would be useful since it will depend largely on our ability to find a safe way of getting wires up lots of stairs, and im especially interested in knowing what other BY users are running. Obviously cheap is nice, and it doesnt need to include a hub or switch All really NEED is basic NAT support but port forwarding and VPN support would be handy cheers
Zero1
Well, i use telewest uk broadband, quite good when it works ;) I am using a Belkin 4 port router (link) seems to work very well, comes with utilities, etc. Low power consumption from what i can see, i leave it on the whole time. It does have a MAC address cloning tool in its web panel, wish i'd noticed that before i spent 4 hours on the phone trying to get through to the support :pinch: I think the thing was about ?60 or ?70. Gism0
i've got blueyonder and a random linksys router, it does the job well and there's also an option to type in any old MAC address.. I just got the install guys to install to a computer like they are taught, then changed it all when they left :D
m0
ive also got blueyonder, with the linksys BEFW11S4 router. ------ the router can clone a mac address... which i think is described above OR you can go to Blueyonder Selfcare and login with the username and password they gave you and register different mac addresses. I have several mac addresses which are registered, so i can connect my pc straight to cable modem or router etc. ----------- With the Second Option you wont have to buy a router.... which will allow me to easily discern its MAC address. and lastly, my router runs 24/7 almost and hasnt let me down even once, also i dont think it consumes much electricity. Hope my post is of use :) m0.
Homer
Ive got a netgear MR314 router, low power consumption, silent and wireless. It can be very ****y when it dont want to work though
Garry
The wireless Netgear MR314 is very poor compared to other routers of around the same price. I would also stay away from Belkin. They offer budget range network kit, however it's hard to fault it until you use something better and see the difference. Having had a Belkin router, and a Netgear MR314, I recently upgraded to a D-Link DI624; which I think it a great 802.11g router. Whereas, with my Netgear, I would have little or no wireless connection in my lounge, I now have a 100% connection. Any routers on the market will allow you to clone/set MAC addresses.
