Can't connect to Google or Yahoo

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Did a fresh install of Windows XP about a week ago and patched it up and everything was running great until this morning when I tried to search for something on Google, I used the toolbar for my search, and I got 'Cannot find server' page. Okay, so I tried typing in google.com to the address bar, same thing. Okay, I need to find something so I head on over to Yahoo.com, same thing, whenever I hit enter to search on Yahoo, comes up with 'Cannot find server' error. Okay.

I open up regedit to check around and see if anything has modified IE and the way it behaves with prompting for user input on a form or messed up my google toolbar, no luck.

Tried ipconfig /flushdns and no avail.

I also tried Mozilla, and same thing happened. :(

This sucks, I don't know anything w/o Google, can someone help me out?

Thanks in advance

Here's a couple ideas:

1 - from a CMD prompt ping yahoo.com. See what ip address it gives you. You should get somthing like this:

C:\>ping google.com

Pinging google.com [216.239.53.99] with 32 bytes of data:

Request timed out.

Request timed out.

Request timed out.

Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 216.239.53.99:

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

C:\>

If it gives you another ip address for google, your dns might be wrong. Try browsing by ip address to see if it's a DNS issue. Some articles on QHOST gives the registry key it modifies, see if you have that key. You could also reinstall TCP/ip, even on windows XP.

I have had this issue everytime I have tried to install the Recommended Update for Windows XP SP1 (817778) or the also called: The Advanced Networking Pack for Windows XP , This update messes something up the way windows checks DNS or something. Unistalling that patch might get it all working for you, If you just installed WindowsXP as you say I doubt it you already got a trojan, but again always make sure you use an updated virus scanner and be careful where you download stuff from.

Hope this helps.

If you think you have the Qhosts-1 virus, the following should get you back online:(win xp version here, other OS similar)

Click the Start button

Click Control Panel

Click on Network and Internet Connections

Click Network Connections

Right click the Local Area Connection you are using and select Properties

In Local Area Connection Properties,

Pull the General tab forward.

Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Click the Properties button

On Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties:

Select Obtain an IP address automatically

Select Obtain DNS server address automatically <<<< if this is not set to auto, you possibly have this virus.

Now try to get on the net and update you virus definition files and scan your system...
