Why does my computer run crap each time I have a GPU accelerated program ru

Question

Guys, I've been having this issue for a loooong time, and I don't see to find a workaround for it. Currently, each time I use a GPU accelerated program (specially Media Player Classic when in DXVA), my computer becomes sluggish and unresponsive.

I currently have a Dell XPS M1530 with Core 2 Duo @2.4 (Mobile) and Nvidia Geforce 8600m GT. I'm currently sporting the 285.62 drivers. I don't know what to do!

Thanks for the help in beforehand :p.

How odd. mpchc indicating it's using the gpu points to a driver issue I'd think. That said, have you any codecs installed? I've been using shark007's coupled with his custom builds of mpchc to use installed codecs and it's been a breeze.

Also, have you tried using the task manager to see what's using the cpu, or try process explorer for more info/detail?

I have K-Lite Codec Pack 8.1 installed. The Task Manager and the Resource Monitor both detect very low CPU ussage, which means that the video card is being used.

There was a time in which I managed to fix the issue by installing outdated drivers and downgrading the Bios to an older version. Right now I can't afford to do that because the computer internals were recently replaced and the tech guy recommended me to stay with the latest Bios.

I once tried doing a Video Driver spaghetti by installing three different-dates video drivers and also worked, but now it does not.

I'm currently using Win7 x64 if that helps...

BTW: Never used Shark007, since K-Lite has worked for me.

Do not use MadVR

Do not use Float Point Surfaces in EVR:CP

Do not use MPC's V-Sync functions - they are worthless with Aero

If you do not do any of the dumb things I listed above, you simply need a good quality driver.

Does this happen when using the gpu via agpu accel website in chrome? Very odd problem.

I'd advise posting on the shark007 forum but you'd really need to install his codec pack-which is awesome-but this uninstalls any other codec...though his really do work well. That said it sounds like something weirder is happening.

Hmmm... I could try that... I really don't care to use Shark007, since the codecs he provides are the same. I'll try that later on (means in about 24 hours) and post back to see the results.

How do I know if I'm using Float Point Surfaces in EVR:CP?

Right Click -> Renderer Settings -> Presentation

Also external codecs are needed mostly for... Windows Media Player.

MPC:HC comes with all the codecs you need...

Additionally make sure you are using the latest MPC:HC from SVN

Damn! That did the job!!!!!!

Yesssssss!!!!!

:D :D :D :D :D :D

Up until now every video I've put on it, even a Full HD 10-bit video it was able to decode it flawlessly!

OMG!!!!!

Thanks a lot.

Never knew that Frame Correction could render almost unusable the video..

(Y) Thanks man a lot!

I have one video more to test, but I will do that later and post back the results :shifty:

Oh, BTW, why you don't recommend madVR at all? I've heard that even though it presents little difference between LAV and DirectVob it displays a little better the image (although I couldn't actually distinguish it for myself)

Hmmm Seems LAV's CUVID lags.... Anyways, I'll be back using MPC's DXVA decoder, and when 10-bit, LAV or DirectVob will do the job.

MadVR does not support DXVA. MadVR does a lot of fancy tricks to improve quality - most done of the GPU. PCs become unresponsive without CPU usage being maxed out when the GPU is maxed out. Thus it requires higher end hardware. IMO, your GPU is simply not meant for "gold headphone jacks" crowd of the video community.

I also do not advice encoding your media in 10-bit as it is not support by any Video Decoding Chip, instead up the bitrates for your normal encodes using no more than 8 reference frames and avoid 5.x h264 profiles (although they probably work with NV, still on the safe side not to...) :)

Thanks Heracles for the reply :p.

Right now I have no problems at all playing 10-bit, even in FHD.

Yeah, I know about the video card. It's a mid range card and the first to actually support DirectX 10 and h.264 acceleration (From the 600m series). 1st gen are never good doing the features they say to do, but I'm still happy with my machine :D. (Although a lot of power would do good)

Again, thanks a lot.

Edit:

Hahhaha. Ok. I usually don't do 10-bit encoding, but anyways thanks a lot for the tip.
