Berserk87
I know your not supposed to do it, but I don't have physical access to our wireless router (renting a basement suite). The router is a WRT400N, and doesnt have any warnings about flashing over wifi, so i'm assuming it downloads and caches the new firmware, then flashes it. TAZMINATOR
Talk with them first before do anything to the router. If they ask you why you want to do it, you explain to them and they may let you do it otherwise they throw your ass out of their place if you do it without their permission. joep1984
Ignoring the fact that it isn't even your router in the first place... Yes, it does not say you shouldn't flash over wifi...but you shouldn't flash over wifi. Your signal may drop, the signal quality may not be good, or there can be any other issues you wouldn't get if you had flashed it over ethernet. But, ya know...it's not your property, so I wouldn't do it. If you brick it and they find out who did it, you're looking to be homeless.
notuptome2004
Where does the OP indicate it is not his property i mean it could be that he has the router tucked away behind other components and it be a Pain in the butt to get to so doing what he wants over Wirless is his only option ( i helped a friend of mine gene do the extact same thing well told him he could cause his router was behind a mess of computer **** tucked away) OP is this your router or not your router

I would ask the owner of the router to update the firmware.
Berserk87
If I bricked their router I would fix/replace it, I doubt they would make me homeless... either way i'll talk to them and see if they'll let me update it.
+BudMan MVC Posted January 19, 2012 MVC Share Posted January 19, 2012 As stated, firmware updates over wireless would be a REALLY BAD idea!!! Now in theory sure it could work depending on how the router does its updates, file is just copied over to the router and then it reboots loading it.. If that is the case then there would be no issues. But its like they kick off the process before the file is there, and you never know what could happen over wireless - so file might not get there, etc. etc.. Always connect with wire when doing such things! ;) To be honest from a security standpoint, you should not even be able to get to the router admin gui from wireless. I've never set up my wireless like that, but it makes sense. out of curiosity, whats the easiest way to do that? I wouldnt set it up like that now since there isnt a single computer hardwired into the router, just curious.
+BudMan MVC Posted January 20, 2012 MVC Share Posted January 20, 2012 Its a check mark in the settings. I don't think I have ever seen a router that did not have this feature.
Roger H. Veteran Posted January 20, 2012 Veteran Share Posted January 20, 2012 I've done my E4200 to DD-WRT everytime that way and my previous ones too. I know that it's a bad idea but I have never had the bad luck of bricking one. As others have said already, it's not a good idea besides the whole part about it not being yours. :) DD-WRT also has the option not to allow admin access via WLAN clients.
