Setting up a VLAN with a domain controller

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!

So here at work, we have a server (running Windows Server 2008 r2) giving out DHCP. It has no AD DC on it at the moment. My boss has a server for our second office that he needs Active Directory set up on, as well as giving out DHCP.

I know that in order to dictate where certain hosts get their DHCP from, I need to set up a VLAN. However will the fact that the one server is acting as a Domain Controller cause a conflict? Or will just the fact that I'm setting up a VLAN keep the completely seperate?

Thanks!

where did you get that idea that you have to setup vlans?

But its kind of a given that 2 different offices, I take it they are geographically separated so I would have to assume they are 2 different network segments.

Yes dhcp is a broadcast protocol, so the dhcp server would have to be on the same segment/vlan as the client - unless you are using a dhcp helper or proxy, etc to send the dhcp request to a dhcp server located on a different segment.

How are these offices connected, I'm trying to understand how you would put them on the same network segment in the first place?
