New Wireless Router Needed

Recommended Posts

I need a little help picking a new wireless router. speed, range, duel band (ability to add extended antennas) id prefer ddwrt and tomato compatible but its not a must if it comes with good firmware already. My price range is 100-200. Any ideas?

I've had problems with every router I've bought except for my Apple Time Capsule. This is obviously out of your price range but you could buy one of their regular Airport Base Stations.

Dunno what you consider good firmware but the Linksys E4200 is one of the best, the Asus RT56/66-Us is too one of the best when it comes to actual routing. You can put DD-WRT on either of the first 2 and it works pretty good too if you need those extra features. Most don't allow external antennas no more, it's better to just setup up another access point IMO as you get a better cleaner signal than say more noise.

I just bought the Linksys e4200 and pretty happy with it. I want to put DD-WRT on it but not sure what all I would loose out on because of the dual band wireless..

I just got the Cisco E3000 router. Is a dual band (n and b/g) but also supports dd-wrt and tomato. I would had loved to go to the Cisco E4200 but price was a the factor for me. I landed the E3000 for $69 on newegg recently. Found deal on slickdeals. the router doesn't have external antennas but a quick google search shows its not hard to do and you can buy a kit that allows adding them. Just need to do a little soldering on 2 points and drilling hole in back. But like someone else said, maybe better getting another low cost AP with external antennas to bridge the connection.

I would put dd-wrt on it man. From all the reading i've heard nothing but good things with nonstock firmware. No losing of ability, if anything you gain. Not to mention you get rid of the WPS vulnerability as dd-wrt doesnt' support it.

Does yours get pretty hot? i know the E3000 runs pretty hot so i got an external usb powered chiller mat meant for a netbook/laptop to cool it. Works pretty well.

What do you guys think of the ASUS RT-N66U?

I mentioned that one on my list but not much info about that one yet:

If you want a look at what the firmware looks like (emulated):

The 56U though is the fastest router now (in home segment :D) but you may want something the 3 stream compatibility?

Thanks! I will try to load that up today!

I would suggest the Linksys E4200, but it doesn't have removable antennas like you asked, although I'm sure you wouldn't need to anyway because it has a really good range on it anyway.

I have DD-WRT on my E4200v1 and it works great for me. Right now 22 days uptime as I restarted everything at midnight Jan 1st :D It's been running between xbox, phones, laptops and servers and hasn't lost a single step. The bottom, where the mobo is gets warm usually but mine is now on a glass tabletop so i guess it helps with airflow as nothing is underneath to restrict airflow. The tops never were hot at all. In DD-WRT also i've lowered the transmit power to about 17mW (vs 100mW default) since my place is smaller but i think it also keeps the device cooler as well. I still get full signal all over my place.

Ive had the Netgear WNDR3700, WNDR4000 as well and those were great, just liked the look of the E4200 :)

NOTE - I should probably say try getting the V1 if you can of the E4200 - the V2 doesn't support 3rd party and wont ever. The V1 also seems to be a lot faster based on tests unless the tests were a fluke at smallnetbuilder.com
