uni problems

Recommended Posts

I have just moved into university and we have a 10meg/s internet connection! I wanted to use this to my advantage, but I cant the only thing that will connect is IE and outlook (to get e-mails only cant send!!) msn and that?s about it! Is there any way I can get other programs to work over the network (internet) I am guessing there is a hefty firewall in place, but I don?t know much about computers and need some help, I have been told I may be able http tunnel but I don?t know how I tried using http-tunnel (the program) and it worked but very very slo:crazy:crazy:

If you can help or know of any tutorials that will help me as I am a bigger in this sort of use of computers ( I can build them, install windows and I am a capable user, but nothing more advanced)

I will check tomorrow and respond to any questions or requests for me to try things! I can download of the web at about 3mb/s which is good!!  no file sharing programs or mirc ect!!

I hope you guys can up trumps here thanks!! :D

im in the same predicament...nothing you can do - although yes you can get an HTTP/FTP tunnel - which will need to be on a fast connection for you to take advantage of that speed :)

Buy a irc bouncer for about ?1 / month and then ssh tunnel to it and then join mirc via a remote connection. that was what i planned to do, but when i arrived at uni i found that i could use irc anyway, so all is good:pp

Well, thats one probelm sorted, good luck on the others!

were can i get a irc bouncer from?

Is http tunneling tracable by admins? or does it just look like a normal internet connection! (will something big come on the computers saying "this dude is trying to get round your network stop him and kill him now!!" style?) or is it ok to use?? thanks

you know, everything you do can be found out by admins. all they gotta do is check the bandwidth usage and see that certain areas are getting far more then they should and they'll research it.

you can get into a TON of trouble if you get caught. people don't go to school to download porn, warez, music, and bootleg movies.

lmao

and get into trouble? why bother? move out, get your own apartment with a broadband connection and download to your hearts delight.

schools are cracking down on this big time. they don't want to be sued at all plus they finally figured out that they don't have to spend more money on bigger servers and increased bandwidth if they cut out all the file-sharing bit.

i dont know!! maybe, how would i find out?

Firstly is this your computer or one provided by the Uni?

To check if it is using a proxy server, open Internet Explorer.

Then go to Tools->Internet Options.

Then click on the connections tab. Then click on the LAN settings button.

In this window see where it says "Use a proxy server for your LAN..." if the check box ihas a tick you are using a proxy server.

Copy down the IP address and Port number.

If you can't get to this screen maybe the PC has been locked down by the UNI (I am assuming this is a computer provided by the Uni).

If you can get to this screen yet, the check box for "Automatically Detect Settings" has a tick, it could mean your Uni is using transparent proxy servers.

http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,...i212840,00.htmlBTW this is a definition of a proxy server.

NOTE: Things to understand is that programs like Windows Media Player inherents this proxy from your IE settings, but programs like Mozilla don't. So you have to provide these programs with the IP address and Port number.

I hope I have been helpful.

Wait a second I didn't notice this.

It is best to talk to your Uni admin.
