Delightus14
Hello everyone, I am some issues connecting to the printer that is connected to the other router. I know I have to somehow make each router talk to eachother but I think I am getting really close but probably just missing one step. Either way, I will explain everything and hope someone can help me out. Main Router: 192.168.1.1 (TP LINK) - Handles the internet connection. - 1st port connects a Computer ito it. - Printer is networked to it. 192.168.1.105 Second Router: 192.168.0.1 (D LINK) - Is connected to Main Router through the WAN port (from what I have read I know this is an issue but I am still having issues) - 1st port connects to my computer - 2nd port connects to my PS3 for media server. Would love some help on this as university is coming back soon and will need to print alot. Thank you
lars77
Is there a reason you specifically need two routers? Why wouldn't you just have one router to handle the internet, & then connect the router to a network switch for the rest of the network? Doing that, if you keep everything on the 192.168.1.x network everything would work fine. Or try using the 2nd router as a network switch. e.g. something like this: Main Router: - WAN: should be internet? (e.g. DSL or Cable modem, if you're using that?) - LAN1-3: Computer, Printer, Second Router Second Router: - WAN: Nothing - LAN1-3: Computer, PS3, Main Router For the Second Router: - Disable its DHCP server - Assign it a static IP address 192.168.1.x (e.g. 192.168.1.2) - Also disable stuff like firewall, etc. The above would be how I'd do it, assuming you can't just get a regular network switch to replace the second router. Also, how is the main router handling the internet connection if you have something else plugged into the WAN port?
+BudMan MVC Posted January 27, 2012 MVC Share Posted January 27, 2012 ^ exactly!! It looks like your doing a double nat for anything connected to the 2nd router. Unless you have it setup as just router and not a gateway? But this is rare, and not done by someone that does not fully understand network and why they would set it that way. If you just plugged in a typical soho second router using its wan port to your network, it too would be doing nat. Now with printing it could work like this if printer on first and client on second -- but prob having an issue finding the printer. But printing from say client on first network to second network, you would have to setup port forwards, etc. It a PITA for no reason in the home setup. I would really suggest you go with the above suggestion and use your second router as just an AP (if wireless) or switch by following the above instructions. This will place all of your devices on the same network and remove all the issues you can have with communicating across a nat. And will also remove your double nat devices connecting to the second router would be behind for talking to the internet.
Delightus14
Ok. I understand what you want me to do. Just dont know which settings on the router to change. Obviously you guys might have a different router to me, but hopefully you can deduce from these screenshots. From 1.jpg - Do I select option 2; Static IP? If So refer to 1a.jpg. - Do I change anything else from the selection? Leave blank? Or put new DNS/Gateway addresses? Now both of those options were from the WAN page. Do I change on this page or from the LAN page? Refer to 2.jpg. - As this is on the LAN page, do I just change the IP address to say what Lars77 said for example 192.168.1.2 ? Also included screen shot of the DHCP menu - refer to 3.jpg. - As from above responses, I disable DHCP server? - Do I change it to a Static DHCP? And change the IP address to what I wrote above? Would really appreciate some more help guys. So far you have helped alot but just need some tailoring. Thank you alot
+BudMan MVC Posted January 30, 2012 MVC Share Posted January 30, 2012 Your not going to be using your WAN port so 1 and 1a are kind of pointless to what you do with them. Not going to matter at all what is set in there - again your NOT using the 2nd routers wan port. Yeah you would change the IP to something on your first routers network.. So if your first router is 192.168.1.1, then sure 192.168.1.2 would work. Just make sure nothing else on your network is using that IP, nor is it in the range of ips your first router could hand out in dhcp. image 3 not sure what you do not grasp about Disable DHCP server -- that seems pretty clear to me.. See the DISABLE radio button. That static section on the bottom of that page is for reservations of IPs this dhcp server would hand out - but since its going to be disabled - then that sections is again a non topic issue.
