vmware server won't see workstation vms

Question

I had vmware workstation running and my server 2008 was running and working fine. In order to make sure the server runs as a service on start up I did some research and found out that vmware server allows for this to happen. So I downloaded vmware server and am not having a lot of trouble. vmware server seems to be old and doesn't support somethings like 4 processors... not a big deal.

Problem is, I power on the server but it doesn't really work. If I use the consol window and watch the server boot, it will work better but still doesn't work properly. The server ping is really high when i ping it and my sharepoint server takes a good 5 minutes to load up, it's empty so it really shouldn't take so long. this was all working fine under workstation 8.

what am I doing wrong? is there a way to run my vmware server as a service and not deal with this headache? I remember finding a script that allowed virtualbox to do this. Should I just convert my vm to a virtualbox vm and not deal with the headache?

I know too many questions. If you could point me to your favorite noobie guide that would be great. I am in the middle of reading the manual for vmware server.

why aren't you running a esxi hypervisor?

I don't know how, i am just starting out and am not exactly sure what's best.

this should help, about half way down the page...search for "Host-wide Virtual Machine Startup and Shutdown"

http://www.virtuatop...t-Wide_Settings

lol I found the same link about 30 minutes after I posted. I kept thinking this would be under the VM settings but it's under the server settings. My sharepoint server still runs very sluggishly compared to when I use the workstation to run the server.

sharepoint is going to run sluggish. you would need a dedicated vm server as well as the processing power, memory, and storage bandwidth behind it. A if you download the vm hypervisor (free), it is a bootable disk (much like a windows install disk) and loads the vmware OS on your system. you would access it from a windows desktop to configure any guest OSes on it. So you would need 2 machines to accomplish this to make it work fast, one to host your servers and one to manage. The hypervisor also supports 64 bit Oses.

vmware server has been depreciated in favor of running ESXi/VSphere and vmware workstation.

vmware vsphere is a bare metal hypervisor that is a virtualization operating system. all it does it be a hypervisor, therfore you have more resources for your virtual machines without OS overhead.

You can also convert physical machines into virtual machines with the free vmware vcenter converter
