Would you hire someone who...

Recommended Posts

Friend of mine really wants to work for this company that is headquartered right across the street from his downtown apartment. He has already applied but it is a big company so he hasn't heard anything. He wants to put on a shirt and tie and just walk in the front door introducing himself...

He says the interview is usually where you make your first impression but if they won't give him one, he needs to make his first impression some other way. He says he will just say he has applied and would like a tour of the place so he can know more about the company.

I am not sure if this is a good idea. What do you think? The company is called Accenture and it is a huge consulting firm.

Why not just walk in all slicked up and say something like "I hear you're looking for one good employee, like me? I have already applied and would like to know the status of application?"

I've used that line several times and I KNOW it has worked. It amuses/amazes the person you lay it on to no end, sometimes. THAT'S your first impression!! Second impression, in this case.

I know this line has worked because I have asked, after being hired, what it was that got their attention. They loved that introduction!!

Accenture is a massive company...it'll probably take months to get word back from them... especially atm as the university graduate schemes are all going on so they'll be hundreds of people applying which will slow down HR.

I would advise against this...some companies will take a joke/stunt like that...I don't think Accenture would.

My advice give them a ring and ask about the application status.

or try what cork1958 said...though saying that to the receptionist (as thats who your gonna take to 1st by going there) may not work.

+1 this

I advised against this but he says they want a people person that can navigate any situation. He is what they want and he has to show them that they want him. So he is gonna go in and ask about his application instead of calling someone on the phone. He says he wants to meet someone who will make the decision and not have that persons secretary tell him that he is part of a pile of resumes.

I've actually worked for Accenture before, and they required ID at my branch.

It all sounded good though, til 'and say he wants a tour of the company'.

This.

Being offensive, but polite, is always a plus.

It means you're dedicated, interested into THIS specific workplace and show initiative.

It works for us. My employer loves people who comes back to check on a job. He says it shows they want to work. We've hired some of our best employees this way.
