Please help with quick VPN question :(

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

Quick question here.

I have a VPN server running on a mac. (IVPN Snow Leapord)

I can connect to it VIA windows 7 AND OSX client machines

But....

I get NO internet access when connected.

When I disable the use default gateway checkbox via the windows client, I can use internet again BUT I dont get the new IP and it acts as though im just connected normally.

Any ideas?

Thanks everyone!

Thanks for the reply but can you elaborate on that??

Using ivpn I dont see any settings that have gateway settings. Just IP ranges to assign, Basic or advanced DNS and adding accounts/

When connected to the VPN is seems it can find the web sites but errors out when "connecting"

You're looking for this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Split_tunneling.

For my company's VPN, I have to set the DNS suffix to <domain>.local in my Windows VPN settings. It's on the DNS tab of the TCP/IP settings where you unchecked the gateway setting (which you were correct in doing).

I'm not sure how to configure it for your specific network situation or with clients for iVPN. Hopefully, the correct terminology and that article will get you pointed in the right direction though.

*** Actually scratch that. Whenever I have the gateway settings unchecked, it will connect but I will NEVER get a new IP at all :(

Great thanks so much for that info it makes perfect sense!!

I can see where I input those settings. Im not connecting to a domain at all just the machine hosting the VPN so what should those DNS settings be?

Any ideas? Thanks so much I appreciate the step in the right direction.

******I tried entering the servers IP address for the domain DNS but it keeps spitting back error saying invalid IP/

So I guess I have to try and use the servers DNS but I cant seem where to put that.
