Nashy
Alrighty, I'm going to give you our home situation, and hopefully Neowin can tell me how to do it. We have the following devices: 1. Win 7 - WiFi or Ethernet (Currently Ethernet) 2. Win 7 - Ethernet 3. Win V - Ethernet 4. Win 7 Laptop - WiFi 5. XBOX 360 x2 - Ethernet 6. XBOX 360 - WiFi 7. iPhone, Galaxy SII, Galaxy Nexus The problem is, the current user on number 2, doesn't understand how the net works, and is very selfish when it comes to using the net. He's not meaning to be, I'm sure he just doesn't get it. Long story short, we've upped him a few times about it, and it doesn't change. We are all for saying "No access at all", but I'm nicer than that. If there anyway that I can use my computer (1) to control the Internet connection of 1,2, and 3? I mean, see how much they are downloading, what speed, and limit their speed. I'm doing this as a list ditch attempt to stop an argument, because if I can't do anything to help the situation, I will go along with the "Get your own phone line and connection". Would love some help. If it can be done, can it be dumbed down. I'm not really great with networking. If it helps, I have a second decent router which an be used for whatever, I just can't use it to connect to DSL as it has become faulty. Network connectivity through it works fine. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.
Gerowen
Do you connect directly to your DSL router, or is there a personally owned router between you guys and the DSL box? Yyou could try checking to see what options are available in the router's firmware. Some routers have the options to throttle bandwidth for specific types of internet traffic, set up load balancing, etc. Most home routers have a web interface you can access using the admin username/password by typing the IP address of the router into your web browser. The IP address of the router, if you don't know it, is the IP listed under "default gateway" when you run the command "ipconfig". If your router does not have the options you are looking for, you could try using a 3rd party firmware like DD-WRT, which I use on my home router to provide things like bandwidth monitoring and throttling. I recommend against flashing your router with 3rd party firmware though if you just connect directly to the DSL router, because a) It may not support authenticating with your ISP b) If you don't technically own the router, the ISP may hold you liable for any damages or changes to the router's firmware. I only recommend this option if you own the router you're flashing. I could be mistaken because I'm not an "expert" on networking, but I'm fairly certain that you can't control his bandwidth using your PC unless his PC is somehow configured to go through you for internet access, and even then you'd have to have the software on your computer. That's why the best option, in my opinion, is to set up controls on the router.
Nashy
Hi, thanks for the reply. It is my router, but unfortunately it only has the option to kick him off the network completely via MAC. DD-WRT is not compatable with it either unfortunately, I certainly looked into this. The medem deals with the connection, not the computers. I would be happy for him to get the Internet connection via my computer if I have the control I need over his bandwidth. Nashy
Vista. I'm lazy sorry.
Gerowen
Try out Tomato. It's another 3rd party firmware like DD-WRT that I've heard good things about, and should provide that functionality.
Nashy
The problem is. I'm not comfortable doing stuff to my modem that can brick it, or stop it being updatable to a stock firmware. I've also read that modem functions don't work with most of these. I mean, with a phone, I call Vodafone and get a new one if I can't fix a brick. But with a router, I don't have money to just go and buy a new one. It's especially hard since no router/modem I own is on any lists stating compatibility with these alternatives. +BudMan MVC Posted February 20, 2012 MVC Share Posted February 20, 2012 What is he doing exactly that you feel is causing you issues? Is he running p2p and is choking the upload pipe? Adjust his client to not do that and you will be fine!
Nashy
Yep, downloads and uploads about 5 torrents at a time. We've told him to stop, he doesn't, we've set his client, he uses Google to find ways to make it faster, we loser global, he puts it back up, we set his scheduler, he leaves it running, but sets the limited speed to full speed. We have tried to leave it in his hands, tried to set it up so it's fair on everyone, and he just doesn't seem to give a rats, even getting angry when we remove his ethernet cable just so we can browse. Sounds to me like somebody needs a good old fashioned ass whoopin. Had a guy who unplugged our drash heater in the field one day in order to charge his cell phone. I only had to wake up in a tent at 20 degrees once before he got the idea that charging his cell phone was not more important than the heater was to the rest of us. Cause' in reality if he has direct access to your networking stuff and wants his downloads to run faster, he could always bypass whatever router you have in place by plugging himself straight into the modem. If he's pirating movies and stuff, you could always give the good ol' MPAA or RIAA a phone call, cause' if you've tried being a good roommate and talking to him, and he's still doing it, he's basically telling you to **** off, so why is he deserving of the respect that he's denying you? Edit: By the way, if he is pirating movies and stuff, that's seriously illegal, and I'm not just saying that to be a good moral person. I run an internet cafe at work, and I got a lovely 15 page e-mail from Qwest about a year ago on behalf of folks like Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox, and a few others threatening to sue the Brigade for pirated movies. They even had a list of the movies pirated. Since the net neutrality act was repealed, they can and do monitor your internet connection for stuff like that, and if you're a big enough offender and they can prove it, you might find yourself in court because of something he did. Nashy
I won't discuss downloads. If I can get a setup where a computer is involved, I will simply MAC Address block everything except the one device that will be connected to the modem. So even plugging himself in won't help. I just really want to control his speed in a way where only I have access to control how much he gets. We can stop him plugging and unplugging, because we can physically see he's done it. When his PC is locked and he's upped everything, we can only assume based on our speeds.
+BudMan MVC Posted February 21, 2012 MVC Share Posted February 21, 2012 you know everyone can play nice -- he just needs to limit his upload pipe.. How can anyone be that big of a dick?? Have him set his upload to say 20% of the upload pipe, then everyone should be able to play nice.
