Dazzla Veteran Posted October 6, 2003 Veteran Share Posted October 6, 2003 Go to run and type services.msc, disable the messenger service. This has no effect on any messaging clients.
deltanix
o wow, nice thanks man. How did I get that anyway, was it a security hole in xp?
+primortal Subscriber² Posted October 6, 2003 Subscriber² Share Posted October 6, 2003 not really a security hole, just that your conenction allows communication to the messenger service. Here is an ms kb article http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330904
SimplyPotatoes
ms was retarded to have enable that as default in windows xp home and pro
Frank
It is not a security hole; it is a new way for spammers to get through to you. Are you on high speed Internet? Are you running a firewall? The messaging service was designed for your computer (mainly in a network environment) to tell you when certain things happen. On our network, the UPSs will send a message similar to the spam message you received to tell me it is having a problem. Primortal: you beat me to it ms was retarded to have enable that as default in windows xp home and pro I can see your point with Windows XP Home, but why were they "retarted" to leave it on as the default option in Windows XP pro? XP pro is designed to be run on networks, specifically with a Domain. I would not be happy if I had to enable that service for every machine I have to put out in production. The messenger service is a good way to inform your users of stuff they NEED to do RIGHT NOW. I could send them a email, and they might read it in 2 days, but with the messenger service, it pops up on their screen right now.
deltanix
O ic. I guess its because i have a network running, its a good idea though like it pops up right away. Its just really annoying when those spammers got into it and i was about to pay the $26 to get it out from their site if all else failed. Neowin rocks!! thanks everyone :D
Frank
Delta: You have a network running? Do you have a firewall in place? I always thought it was stupid for a "Anti-Spam" or "Anti-Popup" tool to advertise using spam or popups.
deltanix
Yeah i have one running, like for the other 2 computers i have in my house. and the firewall i kept it off, cuz it was ****in around with all my apps.
Frank
What problems did you have with the firewall? Did you applications have problems connecting to the net? The easiest way to fix that is to find out which ports they use, and unblock them.

MitchShrader
Microsoft isn't user friendly. There are many more 'home' users of XP, than corporate ones.. and MS seriously fails to educate their users. What passes for help, or documentation, is NOT designed to guide users in convenient configuration or proper setup. I don't deny that they produce functional products, but TEACHING they flunk miserably.
trance
Many more home users than corp ones??? I think not. If all the home users on the planet didn't use windows you know what, MS couldn't care less. The corp ones are where they get their money from. Frank
Also, this form of spamming didn't come around till AFTER Windows XP was released. They should change the way that Windows Longhorn handles the messenger service, but I am not sure if they will or not.
