Folder Sync - Backup

Question

Hi guys,

I just recently purchased Genie Backup Manager Pro 8 after reading some good reviews around the internet.

Unfortunatley the compression is not as great as i expected.

I am backing up my movies, music which are located on an external drive.

With Genie Backup Manager, 24.4gigs of files were compressed to a backup file of 24.2gigs.

i was hoping for 50%+ compression.

Can anyone reccomend a better app with better backup compression?

Many people on the board are fans of Acronis True Image, is the compression better?

Thanks for the help

as stated above, movies and music is already compressed, so you will gain very, very little by recompressing them.

$70 for that ? wow - I have never heard of them - & considering Acronis TI2012 is half that - uhhhh

How much are you trying to squeeze and why ? Because you're not even asking about reliability or corrupt archives, etc.

With storage so cheap (yes I know it went up) its weird to hear about someone compressing for lack of space.

ok thanks. I was expecting too much i guess.

the backup size is almost identical to the original file size - i was hoping it would be much smaller to save some space. I might as well buy another drive for backing up like u mentioned.

TEX4s, yes too bad i didnt find this forum before my purchase haha.

thanks guys

As already stated with the file types you mention, your normally not going to see much compression.

If you looking to save space with such media types you could re encode it using different methods. For example if you have flac copies of your music, you could convert them to mp3 using lower bitrates which could drastically lower the size.

Comes down to what quality do you want compared to file size. Example: videos of my grand daughter on my flipcam are 1080p 60fps, I do have the originals stored but they are quite large! So for putting them on the web for family to view I reduce them down - picture is still good, and like a tenth of the size.
