Quick MS Word help

Question

Friend of mine just posted this on Facebook, trying to figure out what's going wrong... Open and Repair didn't work.

"Does anyone know how to fix this? Been saving the document to my desktop the whole time and out of no where tells me something is wrong with the tables and does this???"

I'm looking at it, but I've forgotten how to mess with Word headers.

First of all, are there any hidden ~.tmp files in the directory where this file was saved? If so, see whether those can be renamed to *.doc and opened.

Secondly, this person obviously has a modern version of Office. Tell them to save their files in the new *.*x formats. These are at least human-readable, reducing the chance of being royally screwed even if a file won't open in an Office program.

Yeah, she opened a template from a 2003 syllabus, started editing it in 2010, the screen flashed and it became corrupt. We already tried the .tmp directory thing. Assignment is due 12 hours from now. I guess the best thing to do is start over :/
