I live in Canada and before I pick up a PS2 or a Xbox I would like to know their prices for online gaming. I have cable interent and a router so I am ready there. What I would like to know is what is PS2's online prices and is it monthly or yearly and also Xbox's online prices and also is it monthly or yearly. Please list prices in Canadian dollars if possible.

Before I begin I would just like to note that I do not know Canadian prices. But I have the facts for US pricing, so here it goes.

Xbox is $49.99 for installation disk and headset communicator. This comes with one year of service. After that year, you pay another $49.99 for another year or something like $5 per month. In my opinion, Xbox Live is COMPLETELY WORTH IT. Free downloads and updates all the time, BTW.

As for PS2, all online gaming is free as of now. There are supposed to be plans for individual developers to manage their own pricing (therefore more expensive) but this has not yet happened. You need to buy the network adapter for $39.99, but service is free so far. Only a few games are compatible with voice and broadband as well as narrowband (ewww, who wants to play slow online games with 56kers???) are supported. No downloads available because PS2 does not have a hard drive. Should be available sometime in 2004 bundeled with a select few games (1 game + hard drive) for around $99.

Now that you have the facts, go with Xbox Live. Hella lot less lag, voice is every game, hard drive + downloads, and better friends features (not to mention better online gaming).

There is also a Version 1 Starter Kit you can likely pickup at any local electronics or game retailer for 25.00-35.00 but you must pick it up and register before 10/31/03 when it expires. The Version 2 Starter Kits are 49.99 and include the headset and Tetris Worlds, and playable demos of Mech Assault and MotoGP.

As far as I understand Phantasy Star Online is the only Live game that has an additional fees other than the Live subscription.
