Sharing a 3G dongle on a PC to a router to share internet via Wi-Fi

Recommended Posts

Hey

I have a PC which uses a 3G dongle to connect to the internet. How can I plug in that PC to a router via ethernet and have the 3G dongle's internet connectivity be shared via WiFi in Windows 7 Starter?

Thanks!

you dont need to use a router, just create a "ad-hoc" network on the pc that has the dongle, then other users connect to that wifi network

There is several problems with ad-hoc

1: No security

2: It only allows ONE device to connect to that PC with the dongle.

1) No security...? It's got the level of security you set, which is whatever security is supported by your Wi-Fi card.

2) The hidden windows 7 Wi-Fi access point mode thing, can be found via google. You can do that in linux too.

Anyway, I've seen shops here that have routers at the front of their shop with a USB port (and 3g USB plugged in) and a 4 port ethernet hub which connects to their cash machine and PC. Maybe that's worth looking at?

1) My mistake. I thought ad-hoc networks had 0 security at all.

2) Could you be more specific than calling it "The hidden windows 7 Wi-Fi access point mode thing"? By search, I imagine you mean a ad-hoc network, a feature that is not suppose to be in Windows 7 Starter. The thing is, can I share the internet access coming from the 3G dongle to whoever connects?
