netsurfer802
I"m trying to study computer security (Security+) and am trying to get some hands on experience. I'm trying to see if the wireless I have can be hacked...I've downloaded Cain and it supposedly installed a driver right after installing Cain...but when I click on the wireless tab it says that no driver is installed under "AirPcap" and options are grayed out such as locking onto a channel...Are there only certain wireless adapters that are compatible??...because I'm using a NETGEAR WNA1100 N150 USB adapter>
lars77
Are there only certain wireless adapters that are compatible??...because I'm using a NETGEAR WNA1100 N150 USB adapter> Yup, that is correct, only certain wireless chipsets are supported with this sort of thing. I'm no expert on this, but you'd probably need both a wireless chipset + wireless drivers that at least support monitor mode. Most drivers/chipsets under Windows won't do this, & I doubt the Netgear adapter can do it but I could be wrong.. most people often end up using an Atheros-based wireless chipset w/ Linux drivers (under Linux) since it'll do monitor mode. With Windows I think you can use an AirPcap adapter.. but I'm not sure if you have that adapter or not? if you had an AirPcap adapter then you wouldn't need the Netgear. You can probably Google around for better info, e.g. http://forums.hak5.o...?showtopic=9658 sort of explains this better than myself ;)
+BudMan MVC Posted March 13, 2012 MVC Share Posted March 13, 2012 cain -- that is not the right tool to hack wireless ;) If you want to sniff passwords or record a voip conversation then sure being sent over a open wireless network or already have hacked ok, that would be the right tool. But not for breaking wep or not properly secured wpa\wpa2 networks. There are lots of things you can sniff over a wireless network even when its secured -- but passwords are not one of them ;) The tool your looking for for wireless hacking would be the aircrack stuff. And if you plan on doing anything of this with windows -- might as well just stop now.. If you want to some real world play time just grab a linux distro designed for this stuff, backtrack and a wireless card that works out of the box if you ask me.. I picked up the Alfa AWUS051NH quite some time ago and have not had any issues with it. Works great, and does both 2.4 and 5ghz - great card to have in your bag! Works right out of the box with backtrack 5r1, and you can run it in a virtual machine on your windows box... So easy to play with, etc. I would highly suggest this book to get you started. http://www.amazon.com/BackTrack-Wireless-Penetration-Testing-Beginners/dp/1849515581 BackTrack 5 Wireless Penetration Testing Beginner's Guide Written for the beginner! And gives step by step instructions, etc. Can tell you right now if your wireless is WEP, it takes maybe all of about 30 seconds to break that. Any 8 year old that can google can find all they need to do it in minutes..
netsurfer802
Thanks all for responding....I've been having problems with burning the ISO for Backtrack 5 32-bit...the first burning software I used would keep getting to a certain percentage and then my computer would restart. The second one is called burn4free and so for it's been showing 25% with about an hour remaing with the software buffer used 100%. Excuse me if it's in the manual/book on Backtrack 5 you spoke about...maybe you can tell me of a good program for burning DVD's or if you have the book near-by tell me about where in the book to look because I downloaded the kindle version.... ...Thanks again... netsurfer802
Nevermind....Active ISO worked.
+BudMan MVC Posted March 17, 2012 MVC Share Posted March 17, 2012 Why would you need to burn the iso in the first place? Just boot your VM from it, there is no reason to make it an actual cd unless your going to boot a physical machine. Using a VM is must better way to do this to be sure. But for future reference and burning iso -- or any burning requirements really, imgburn is one of my fav, never an issue with it.
