gregor
We have several computers at home, that are connected to the internet thru switch and then to ADSL Linksys BEFSX41 Linksys router. i allready called my ISP if they have any problems, they even came here and replaced my modem, they checked the internet central, because i heard, many times, they have problems with the central.. well,... this time, when i called an isp helper said, i'm the only one in few months, that has reported that kind of problems. so, what is wrong.. if i just browse the internet, or use email client, or download small size of files, and i don't upload anything, then everything works as it should. but, if i download and/or upload something to some ftp, or let others download from me or something like that, my connection doesn't work as it should. just to let you know, i don't use downlink/uplink from my connection 100%. i have 1mbit uplink, max usage is around 90kb/s (max: 120), while max uplink is 256kbits, i use it around 66% which is around 18-20kb/s (max: 30). you can see, how my connection goes from time to time. that doesn't happen always, neither the same time of days. it just happens: and i don't have an idea what could be wrong! is it possible there's something wrong with router. is router missconfigured? please help me out, because i'm desperate and really want to fix that problem. also, the ISP dude, which came and replaced a modem said, our modem and their central have good synchronisation. please help. thank you all! MPH
Is your ISP Siol?? Disconnect the switch and use just one computer to connect to Internet to see if it is a switch problem?
loc[a]lhost
did you try connecting the ADSL modem to one computer only?
gregor
yes, my isp is SIOL, why you asking that? also, about connecting one computer directly to a modem,.. i didn't tried that yet. but... so, it's possible is SWITCH problem or is it possible it is ROUTER problem? could you please explain how is it possible to be a switch problem? i'm courious. our router also has 4 plugins for 4 different computers, which means, it's also a little bit like switch in it... will try to connect one of the computers directly into router and i will see what will happen. MPH
I'm Siol client too, and have noticed that connection speed drops down if you are using P2P software. When I had installed KazzaLite and eDonkey my connection speed droped to 12 Kb/s and less. I wasn't able to download demos and other files at usual speed (about 128 Kb/s). My friend have similar problems with P2P software. EDIT: I use Siemens XpressLink modem/router Edited October 8, 2003 by MPH
mitodna
hmm, how you know it is the correct speed since it is distributed to 4 computer? correct if i am wrong?
gregor
i wouldn't say that the p2p software problem MPH,.. maybe more router problem, who can't handle so many packages sent your way. is that possible?
MPH
Maybe your computer is used as a "supernode" by P2P programs. Well this is my guess, like I said before, when I and my friend (who is also Siol ADSL client) used Kazaa and eDonkey our speed dropped down. Since Siol has already changed your modem, I think it can be a switch problem. Have you tried to connect to Siol directly without the switch? gregor
i talked with some network/router dude and he explained, that's a frequent desease for those people, who are using firewalls (software or hardware) as i, in my example have linksys router with firewall. and he said, because of amount of small packages i get, router just doesn't forward it but it passes them by (i'm not sure if i wrote that right? -sorry). so, i went to the router control and, the only thing i saw was, Advanced Firewall control, which can be disabled or enabled. it was disabled. but, if enabling it, i only had some cookies, activex options... he said (the guy i talked to), the router should have the option to forward those packets without doing anything to them. i repeat, i have this troubles if advanced firewall enabled or disabled. is it possible that this is a bug in a router, since everything should work without a problem? thanks to all
