Aaron Veteran Posted October 8, 2003 Veteran Share Posted October 8, 2003 How many of you use a data encrypter or shredder? I have been looking around at a bunch of free ones (AxCrypt, AbosluteShield File Shredder, others...) Do any of you go through the effort to shred data or do you just delete it? Just wondering, because while it seems to be a good pratice, it does add some extra time and effort. Thoughts?
Hypoxiaicon
i just delete it, nothing too important and sensitive on my computer, if i had important stuff then yes id consider it ;)
Evizu
nah i dont bother, if there was a possibility of someone actually wanting to get hold of my latest work, then i might reconsider, but as it stands, im pretty sure no one that interested in my latest college project. xp1ode
same here all i use my computer is just mainly for music, college projects, work (nottin important), and just get on neowin and read the news. Even tho i do care if someone was to take something, it really wouldnt make much sense since i dont have anything important that anyone else here doesnt have. Aaron Veteran Posted October 8, 2003 Author Veteran Share Posted October 8, 2003 Yeah, I keep thinking I should because of all the media hype about security and stolen identity, data, blah, blah... Then I ask myself, what do I have on my computer that is sensitive? Nada. Another question, I know that Win just changes the beginning of filenames to mark them for overwriting, which then necissitates the need for these shredders. How does Linux handle this? +Dick Montage Subscriber² Posted October 8, 2003 Subscriber² Share Posted October 8, 2003 Identity Crimes are the highest growing crimes in the UK. That said, my mail sits around for days, my network is 100% unsecure, and I'll tell ya my passwords if you ask ;)

+Dick Montage Subscriber² Posted October 8, 2003 Subscriber² Share Posted October 8, 2003 They are the mixture of random letters and number use to access computers and online services :)

+Dick Montage Subscriber² Posted October 8, 2003 Subscriber² Share Posted October 8, 2003 I use a little random password generator I wrote. It is 100% random, contains [a-z][A-Z][0-9][!"?$%^&()@'~#,./<>\] I never really had a problem with passwords, I just kinda manage to remember the most esoteric of them. Chris Allen Veteran Posted October 8, 2003 Veteran Share Posted October 8, 2003 If anyone wants my pr0n, you can go ahead and get it. Be warry, I'm on dial-up so it's going to take longer. Might just want to ask and I'll burn you some. :D My portfolio for graphic design and other schooling I am paranoid about though. I don't want anyone stealing my stuff. ;)
djgramma
I work with our government, and just recently I've started to record data in my computer on clients and customers. So I have to be paranoid of my data. Funny thing is, I'm not. I never was. No one has ever hacked me (knock on wood) and if they had to, why? Music? They're always on p2p networks. My site? Why?!? Hehe, and other documents, if they want all my announcements to family gatherings and other crap my family always asks me to print, they can have those (not like we're doing another family picnic in a while) So, I'm starting to now use a firewall to protect stuff coming in and out as well as password protect documents. Big hassel but I have to do it (big boss man suggested it)
Tech_8356
You do not know the meaning of the word paranoid until you know what I know now as a worthless trembling existance..... J/K :p but really....I use Steganos File Shredder....it meets the U.S. Gov't Dept. of Defense standards....System Mechanic v4.0's Incinerator does a good job as well. Chicane-UK Veteran Posted October 9, 2003 Veteran Share Posted October 9, 2003 Never really been too fussed to be honest.. I don't have anything that would be life threatening if people accessed my machine. Just personal stuff like emails, and work and stuff I had done. John Veteran Posted October 9, 2003 Veteran Share Posted October 9, 2003 i'm not too paranoid about my own stuff, i have almost nothing of actual importance. but i don't like the idea of getting a trojan and spamming people without me knowing, so i am pretty secure...
