Twilight has ruined us

The American movie and TV industry have contributed in no small measure to the dumbing down of Americans in general.

Very few Americans know the real story of Pocahontas (for example).

Disney has continued to romanticise every good novel out there, and in the process of making them palatable to the average American encumbered with a short attention span, distorts the story beyond recognition.

The average American would also have extreme difficulty in reading, far less comprehending, the following authors:

James Joyce

Pearl Buck

Isaac Asimov

Joseph Conrad

Jack London

et al.

They would also not have the stamina to read Ernest Hemingway.

No wonder when the movie George V was released, a lot of them asked:

What happened to parts 1 to four?

Pathetic.

Edit:

I confess to not ever having finished Anna Karenina, (or ANY Tolstoy) even after several attempts.

I don't think this is anything new. I'm going to guess that 100 years ago the average 12th grade girl wasn't reading and enjoying Dracula out of her own admission.

Dracula is a fictional book about a violent creature feeding on blood who used Vlad Dracul as inspiration due to his violent behaviour and Twilight is a fictional book about 2 girls loving each other that are disrupted by an alpaca at one point who uses some poor author's imagination that enslaves the minds that are yet to develop anything remotely called intellect.

Why can't they get this ?

Yeah, humanity is collectively retarded and we're spiraling into self-destruction, but in a small way, I don't really blame people for not being interested in the original works. I haven't read a book since high school (graduated in '01) because they're boring. You can't expect teenagers with raging hormones and short attention spans to WANT to learn about Columbus and Lincoln and all that other outdated crap. Nobody gives a flipping **** about it.

Wrong, Disney turns those stories into children movies which causes them to become over simplified. There are countless Americans who read and understand all the authors you listed.

and they cast the twilight zombie chick to be the lead in that snow white movie.... oh god. stupidity is to blame for bad movie sales, not piracy.

Wow, just wow! But fake...

Sorry, just don't believe it. Why? Because the subplot in Dracula is a formulaic "Girl loves monster" story - same as Twilight.

The language used in Dracula probably confused them too much for them to realise this.

Personally I thought Dracula was a great book.

It's not surprising, I can remember when I was a teen watching 24 I'd get so bored every time there wasn't an explosion I'd even be playing flash games whilst watching TV and films, I was ashamed of how bad my attention span was, it's one of the reasons I've stopped watching TV and tend to download the odd show and since then my attention span has gone back to normal.

I don't like this planet.

I don't like people attacking the younger generation with baseless crap like this and you wonder why they treat the older generation with contempt.

I bet people who read Shakespeare thought the same of the people who read Bram Stokers Dracula, in a few years people who read and loved Twilight will probably think the same of some future author or interpretation of a story, etc..

Dracula is an awesome book and told in a very intriguing way. It's hardly hard language to understand though...

I bet people who read Shakespeare

There were periods where Shakespeare was considered literary pulp

Yeah, obviously I'm not saying Twilight is of the same caliber but I'm bored of people looking down on other people just because they like something the other doesn't.

You completely missed the whole point of the original posting if that's the conclusion you came to.
