DYEforever3
Hiya all. I just got Sygate personal Firewall Pro, and I did a scan of my ports. One of them was open, and I was hoping someone could help me figure out how to close it :) any help would be much appreciated. thanks.

DYEforever3
i don't think giving out that info is what i need. especially since it makes the hacking job alot easier. no offense, but i don't want to take any chances.
skooter_15
Sorry bout that. I think you can get most of what you're looking for here http://bellsouthpwp.net/i/k/ikpe/SygateBasics.html
DYEforever3
that helps, but i already went through most of the options there. i need to know how to block a specific port. thanks though. it really did help.
BananaMan
Given that only admins here have access to your IP, I think you'll be safe enough to post the port you're talking about. Still, if you don't feel comfortable giving it out, that's fine, but my personal opinion is that there would be no danger in posting it. Cheers! "blocking" the port could be as simple as killing the service running on it, that's why people are asking for the port number. You don't affirmatively "block" a port if nothing is listening on it.. So, cough up the port number, or google for the port and find out what service/application it is.
mr_daemon
don't think giving out that info is what i need. especially since it makes the hacking job alot easier. no offense, but i don't want to take any chances.? ? Learn about "hacking" (which is in fact cracking) first... Please god, spare me the people with personal firewalls who panic when someone ping them... Nobody actually cares about your excel sheets and the pr0n on your HD. Unless you're working for valve and ask how to secure the computer holding the source code and builds.... *coughs* As for securing the ports, the rule of thumb for you should be close everything and just open what you need. The port might also be something from your ISP -- for instance AOL has a port 25 proxy that hijacks your mail... My ISP blocks/Hijacks ports 25 and 80, that might be what is Open. EDIT: I just realized I sound a little bit like a jerk in there. Sorry, I apologize if this offends you, but I just wanted to make a poin;);)

MitchShrader
you 'must' have ports open to use the internet (various ports for various uses) BUT: in advanced rules you can block ports..
mr_daemon
you 'must' have ports open to use the internet (various ports for various uses) BUT: in advanced rules you can block ports.. Actually that is not true. You need to have some outgoing ports open, right. But as for incoming ports, they can be all closed and one will still be able to do his bidding without pain and hassles. However your firewall must allow related packed back in. (As in, a reply to something you sent) Thank ${DEITY} for iptables and stateful matching...
